Roberts Middle School
Aviator Agenda: April 4 -8
THE BEATLES
A Slight Oversight?
Did you know a single teacher in Liverpool, England had half of The Beatles in his music class? Paul McCartney and George Harrison went to the same elementary school in Liverpool, England. They loved music but did not enjoy music class. In a recent interview with the music teacher, he was asked if he had noticed anything special about McCartney and Harrison when they were students. The response? Not a thing.
This might be a slight oversight of not recognizing talents. At Roberts, as teachers we cannot forget the big picture. At this grade and age level, our job is to cultivate those seeds of opportunity. We need to make sure we continuously challenge our students to explore and choose risk, rather than just settling. Though we often tend to view learning as an innate talent, it’s a skill you have to work at to be perfect, just like anything else.
This week will be another busy week. I want to encourage you to keep a positive mindset. We have another week of Mock Testing for both 5th and 6th grade. The mock data will ensure that we meet the students where they are at. Please let me know if you need anything. I will be coming by this week to visit and to check on you. You guys mean everything to me. This Monday you can wear a college shirt (NCAA Tournament in Houston) and jeans. This Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday you can wear jeans and a Roberts shirt. Happy testing....

FOCUSED WALKTHROUGHS: SMALL GROUP INSTRUCTION
- It starts with us, the teacher led group in the blended model. We need to make sure that we are increasing the rigor of instruction in our small group.
What does increasing rigor look like.
- This means providing our students more of a challenging and meaningful learning environment. We want to create a small group environment where students are thinking critically and actively employing problem solving skills. We need to allow our students the opportunity to struggle in their learning.
How do you support this necessary struggle to take your student further than ever?
- This can only happen if we preplan our questions. At times, we let our students off the hook by supplying the answer too quickly. One of the tools we can implement within our small groups is to check for understanding. Understanding is best gauged through a written answer. Written responses give teachers an objective framework for understanding when to move on and when to reteach.
What will we be looking for:
- Give students the opportunity to struggle
- Preplan questions and sentence stems
- Check for understanding through writing
