Meet the Teacher

Monday, Aug. 21st, 4:30-6pm

225 56th Street

Des Moines, IA

This is like an open house. Please meet your teacher and bring your supplies.

Kindergarten Students

During Meet the Teacher on Monday, August 21st, kindergarten families will meet all three kindergarter teachers. All students will be rostered to Kelly Carpenter, but students will experience all three classrooms. Friday, August 25th, families will be notified of their child's teacher.

Monday, August 28th, kindergarten parents will have access to walk kindergarteners to their classrooms and "officially" meet their teacher and bring supplies.

New Staff

We have some new staff members this year. I have included bios and pics, so you can get to know them. We are also looking for a first grade teacher because Megan Miller will be teaching special education at Hanawalt.

Jennifer Williams, Associate Principal

I am thrilled to join the Hanawalt team! I have been serving the students and families of DMPS for over 30 years. My career started in special education as an elementary teacher, coach, and curriculum coordinator. During this time, I worked closely with the math department and later served as a district math coach. I entered administration as a School Improvement Leader at East High School and served in the principalship for the past 10 years at Stowe Elementary an International Baccalaureate School. Through all of these experiences I have grown as an individual who strives to lead with love, family (our students, our school, and our own), and learning at the core.

On a more personal level you'll find I love live music, bike rides, and good food! I live in a multigenerational home (there are 8 of us) on the southwest side of Des Moines with my partner, Rod, my parents and my daughter's family. I am sure to share lots of stories about my two grandchildren, Ruthie (5) and Frankie (2). My oldest daughter is an art teacher at Moore and lives in the Beaverdale neighborhood. We are a close family and love our Des Moines community.

My first day was July 24th and am excited to learn more about all the good things happening at Hanawalt. I look forward to meeting each of you in the year to come!

Bayley Anshutz, ELL

Hello Hanawalt!

My name is Bayley Anshutz (Rustad). I am thrilled to join the Hanawalt staff as an ELL teacher next year. I attended Hanawalt as a student from kindergarten to 5th grade, so it is a dream come true to be back as a staff member! I have been teaching for 9 years at Samuelson Elementary.

I live near Roosevelt with my husband, Frank, our 3-year-old son, Elliott and our greyhound, Mookie.

I look forward to meeting all of you soon!

New Bathrooms and Playground Work

This summer has been very busy around Hanawalt. We are getting some much needed new bathrooms. The playground also had some changes. Old equiment and railroad ties were removed and a new cement pad was installed. Here are some picutre of the work in progress:

4th Annual OneRun

The 4th annual District-wide OneRun fundraiser will be held at Water Works Park on September 23rd, 2023, with check-in between 8:00-8:45 a.m. The event will be a 2-mile fun run/walk with an option to cheer on the sidelines as a supporter! Registration is free for everyone; participation is what will count.

Event fees will be paid by corporate and individual sponsors. Once participation totals are tallied, the money raised will be sent directly to the schools. Each participant may designate one school. The more participants and donations, the more money to Hanawalt!
