Reader's Reef
It's reading. Specifically, reading fiction for pleasure or a leisure time activity. The book can even be a mass market paperback, which are not typically considered to be high-quality literature.
According to a research study published last spring, young adults who read fiction for pleasure display better language skills than those who do not. You can read the entire article here.
As a mother of a high school senior, I want my son to be viewed as well-spoken and be able to appropriately represent himself through his writing. While his K-12 education career may be coming to an end, I want him to possess the skills desired by colleges and employers. The ability to clearly communicate is an important life skill as well.
As partners in education, let's encourage our students to read every day so they have the opportunity to develop skills that will serve them well throughout their lives!
