End-of-School Year Instructional Information
There are just over four weeks left in the 2021-2022 school year. Teachers have been and continue to contact families regarding students who are in danger of failure for the school year in one or more subject areas. Students who do not pass one or more content area class for the year (60 average or higher) may be retained or have to attend the SOAR summer school program.
We are regularly told, "We didn't know he/she was doing poorly." Please be reminded that all families have 24/7 access to their student's grades using the Power School Parent Portal. The instructions for accessing this portal was sent home at the beginning of the school year and has been on each report card sent home with your child and via email following each quarter. In addition, teachers have to maintain documentation of parent contacts when a student is in danger of failure (phone call, email, parent conference, etc.).
This week, families of students who are in danger of failing one or more subjects will receive important information about what will be required moving forward. With 20-plus days remaining in the school year, families of these students are strongly encouraged to:
- Have students at school each day.
- Encourage students to work as hard as they possibly can to improve current class averages by studying and completing all required assignments.
- Read and listen to all communications from the school regarding IEP meetings, grade level requirements, and SOAR.
Should you have any questions, please contact your student's teacher(s) regarding classroom performance or requirements.

Applications Open for Peer Helper Program for 2022-2023
Students selected will be asked to participate in the Peer Helper Summer Camp on July 28-29, 2022, on the campus at CMS and will assist at Summer Registration on August 1st as well as on the first day of school on August 9th. Criteria for selection will be based upon the completion of the application, return of the parent permission form, a review of attendance, grades, and discipline, as well as teacher recommendation.
Applications will be due on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, by 3:00 PM. Parent permission forms are available in the main office and must be submitted to complete the application process. While we were unable to really kick off the Peer Helper program this year due to COVID-related circumstances, we are excited about what the new year will bring! We look forward to the work with this group! The application link is below.
ACAP Summative Testing Continues at CMS This Week
- April 25 - April 28: Make-Up Testing
CMS Families, it is very important that your student is at school on his or her testing date. Please help us complete the state testing by having your student at school during the testing period and on time for school each day. Testing is all online. Your student will need to charge his/her Chromebook each night before the scheduled tests AND bring it and the charger to school the day of testing.
Your student will be provided all supplemental resources (headphones, reference sheets, calculators - where applicable - and reference sheets). Your student may bring a book to read once he or she has completed the assessment each session. Your student may not have any digital device in the testing room (cell phone, Apple Watch, internet accessible devices, etc.) other than the Chromebook. If you have any questions about state testing, please contact the school. Thank you so much for your assistance!
Re-Considering the Free and Reduced Lunch Application
The Washington Post discusses the changes ahead in a recent article that can be found at this link:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2022/03/07/school-nutrition-program-covid-waivers/
We are placing the link for free and reduced lunches for the 2021-2022 school year below. Why? Many families may have chosen not to complete the form because they were aware the breakfast and lunch programs would be free to their students this year. As we approach the new year, if your student has been eligible before , but you did not complete the form this year, it has been recommended that you do it now. Your student will be in a must pay status until the new application is completed, reviewed, and approved in the fall. If you are approved during this school year, you will have a 30-day "grace period" once the school year opens that would cover your child/children.
In addition, families who believe they may not have qualified pre-pandemic are also encouraged to apply. So many things have changed in the past two years. It is important to assure that your child has access to healthy and nutritious food daily during each school day. The application process is secure and confidential. If you have already completed the link for this year, you do not have to re-apply. You will only need to re-apply when the registration portal opens for the next school year. Also, if you are directly certified, you will not have to apply. The link is below, thank you for your consideration!
