Whitford Catholic Primary School
Newsletter 28 - 5 September 2018
Message from the Principal
Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of our school today was a fabulous opportunity to not only reflect upon our history, but to also look to the future with great optimism and renewed vigour.
Mr Brendan Long, Chair of the Whitford Catholic Primary School Board, had the pleasure of welcoming the following distinguished guests and friends who were here to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of our school and to officially open and bless our new facilities:
- Sr Jilyan Dingle, Principal of Whitford Catholic Primary School from 1985 – 1996
- Mr Dan Wood, School Improvement Advisor, representing the Acting Executive Director of Catholic Education WA
- The Honorable Samantha Rowe MLC, Parliamentary Secretary for the Minister for Education and Training
- Mr Ian Goodenough MP, Federal Member for Moore
- Mr Peter Katsambanis MLA, Member for Hillarys
- Mayor Albert Jacob, Mayor of the City of Joondalup
- Mr Ron Hawkins from Ronal Hawkins Architects and Mr Bob Allan from R.I. Allan Architects who designed and managed of the construction of the Stage 6 & 7 Capital Development Projects
- Miss Erin Fowler from Taylor, Robinson, Chaney, Broderick, who was responsible for the design and management of our recent Carpark project and
- Mrs Suzie Smith - Capital Resource Consultant from Catholic Education WA.
- All guests who had taken time out of their busy schedules to be with us.
Integral to our celebrations today was acknowledging and thanking the many people who have been part of our story over the past 40 years. Please refer to the exert below:
I would like to acknowledge our foundation Principal, Sr Mary O’Connor, who has sent her apologies as she is currently in hospital.
We are delighted to have Sr Jilyan here today. Sr Jilyan, along with Sr Mary, as the first two principals of this school had amazing foresight and their contribution has had an enormous impact from the inception of the school right through to the present day. As a school built on the rich traditions of the Mercy Sisters, our focus continues on modelling strong and positive relationships based on the person of Jesus.
We are very lucky to be a parish school, where a close association between school and parish has always been an important part of who we are as a community. On behalf of all present, I wish to thank our priests, Fr Cyprian and Fr Truc and especially acknowledge Fr Joseph Tran who has been unwavering in his support of the school for the past 12 years, and for so readily agreeing to come back to concelebrate our mass today and help in blessing our buildings and our school community. The recent combined school and parish carpark project is an important example of the school and parish working together.
To the staff, who over the past five or more years, have supported the real work of the school during the construction period – thank you for sustaining our learning community and facilitating the very best education possible for our children – an education based on the values of faith, trust, service, community and excellence.
To the School Board and to the Parents & Friends - your advice, together with your financial and practical support has enabled the school to become what we are today. We appreciate the many long hours spent analysing figures and planning a financially sustainable future for our school. You are a great team to work with.
To the staff and parents who have worked tirelessly in preparing for this day – my personal thanks.
To our children – It has been wonderful to see how you have watched as the school has been built around you, and how well you have coped when your play areas were restricted.
You are amazing and such a pleasure to teach– your spirited singing, your beautiful prayers and responses, your wonderful dance have all added to this special day.
Finally, on behalf of the parents, staff and students, I thank the many people who have come to celebrate with us – foundation staff, staff who have worked at the school over the past 40 years, past and present families, community members, board members, distinguished guests and parishioners. We are indeed very fortunate to have had and continue to have, so many people involved in making Whitford Catholic Primary School the vibrant, nurturing and faith-filled place that it is today. Thank you.
Blessing the buildings at the end of mass was the perfect opportunity to have a tour of the new facilities, and showcase the great things our staff and students are doing today. Complimenting this was the afternoon Performing Arts Concert in the school hall for students and families and I must say, we have some very talented young musicians and performers in our midst!
Thank you to Mrs Susan Massey, Mrs Deb Arbuckle, Mrs Denise Gee and Mrs Fran Donaldson for organising our lunch and to Mrs Alli Falconer for managing the organisation of the entire event. It is this team effort that has made the day so successful.
Many blessings and thanks to everyone.

School Photos - Term 4
On Wednesday 10 October and Thursday 11 October, school photos will be taken in the school hall.
There are a number of issues that require your attention for these two days:
- Children must wear their full school summer uniform on both days. If your child normally wears their sports uniform on Wednesday or Thursday, they must be in school uniform for these two days.
- Personalised instruction slips with a unique student code will be distributed to parents on Thursday 6th September through the class note box. All class and individual photos can only be ordered online. Please contact MSP Photography on 9240 8000 if you have any queries.
Please note the arrangements for Pre Kindy classes.
Photos will only be taken on Thursday. If your child is in Pre Kindy on Tuesday they should attend on Thursday from 9.00am – 9.50am for an individual and group photo. Photos are not compulsory, however, it would be a lovely memento of their first year at school.
Family Photos
MSP Photography is offering the chance to have family portraits done again this year. If you wish for your children to have a family photo together, please obtain the family photo envelope at the front office. This is a completely separate envelope from your children’s individual instruction slip. Family photos will be scheduled before school on Wednesday and Thursday. NOTE: Family photos cannot be ordered online.
The expiry date for online ordering is the 17th October. Any orders received after this date are treated as re orders and will incur a $30.00 re order charge on top of your order. You can email your order request through to reorders.perth@msp.com.au or call MSP Photography
on 9240 8000.
The photo timetable will be placed in the newsletter next Wednesday 12 September.

Wheelchairs for Kids
Eoghan Barrowclough (Year 5W) has been busy promoting his collection of blankets and teddies for the ‘Wheelchairs for Kids’ organisation. This is an organisation made up of volunteers who give their time to make wheelchairs for children in need around the world. They also provide blankets and teddies with the wheelchair. Eoghan and the Christian ministry will be hosting a blanket and teddy collection drive every morning in the last week of school (Monday 17th September to Thursday 20th September) in the front of the school office.
Eoghan and the Christian ministry are also looking at other fundraising initiatives for the ‘Wheelchairs for Kids’ organisation. A new wheelchair is made for every $200 raised. The students have decided to host a cake stall at the Junior athletics carnival (Wednesday 12 September) and a Grand Final Show your colours free dress day with a gold coin donation for the last day of term (Thursday 20 September). We look forward to supporting Eoghan and the Christian Ministry in this very worthy cause.
