Stephan Douglass is a very unappreciated person in history, when he actually contributed so much to mold this country into what it is today. He did many things that no one even knows about! Well, now you will know . . .
Abby: Who was Stephan Douglass?
Stephan Arnold Douglass was Born on April 23rd, 1813 on a farm near Brandon, Vermont. As a child he will move to Illinois, where he will spend the rest of his life. As a teenager he got an education and attended law school until he decided to run for Congress.
He doesn't get into Congress, so after many years he becomes the President of the Democratic Party. Soon after, he runs against Lincoln for President, but is defeated. Douglass dies on June 3rd, 1861 and was buried in Chicago.
Abby: Politics and Significance
Douglass was a Democrat, but not just any Democrat. He was the president of the Democratic Party! He also ran against Abraham Lincoln for President of the United States.
Stephan also was the brains behind the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854, and he helped Henry Clay out with the Compromise of 1850.
