Clipper Family Connection
Sturgeon Bay High School Newsletter
From the Principal
Hello Sturgeon Bay High School Families,
The countdown to September 5 has started! We are excited to be only weeks away from the start of the 2023-2024 school year. We hope our students and families have taken time to enjoy the weather and found time to slow down and enjoy the little moments.
To our new Freshmen, we will be holding our Freshmen Student/Family Orientation on Thursday, August 24 at 6:00pm in the high school auditorium. I will present information about what to expect in high school, how we operate, and welcoming you to SBHS. You will then have time to tour the building, find your classrooms, and locate your lockers.
On Wednesday, August 30, there will be a district wide Open House for each of our schools from 4:00pm-6:00pm. This is a time for parents and students to walk through the building and make sure they know where lockers are located, classrooms are located and to meet the teachers before school starts. We are here to answer any questions and to help students feel comfortable for the start of the school year.
The first day of school will be held on Tuesday, September 5 for all students. Our staff have been working hard to get everything ready for the new year. Our schedule for the upcoming school year remains the same as last year. School runs from 8:00am - 3:20pm. Students can take advantage of our open campus lunch as long as they return to classes on time. In addition, we will continue with our 30 minute enrichment/intervention time called, Clipper Time, between Blocks 3 and 4. A copy of the bell schedule is below in this newsletter.
In addition, below you will find links to our 2023-2024 school calendar, which is also located on our district website. The calendar will show all the details for days off, half days, holidays, and the end of each quarter. I am hoping you find most of the information you need right here in this newsletter.
Enjoy this time and please reach out with any questions.
All my best,
Keith Nerby

Cell Phone Expectations
We understand that cell phones and similar items are a way of life for many students and families. We also need to help teach our students when it is appropriate and not to use these devices. We thank you in advance for your partnership as we work to help students focus on academics and learning in the classrooms.
Make Sure to Register for 2023-2024
What is Clipper Time?
Clipper Time is something we started last year and it was very successful for our students and staff. But what is it? Clipper Time is a 30 minute daily meeting time to work with students on academic needs and acceleration. We know for some students, having a structured study time with content specific teachers will help them get questions answered and grow academically. We also know that a time devoted to enrichment or opportunities for students to excel beyond the regular curriculum will also be a huge benefit. The purpose of this 30 minute Clipper Time is to meet the needs of each student at SBHS and provide more opportunities to interact with teachers and staff to help our students reach their full potential.
We start each week with a traditional Homeroom on Monday’s. Students stay with their Homeroom teachers all four years and get to interact with a cohort of students that they might not normally socialize or work with. These Homerooms are built around grade levels. This enables us to provide information to Homeroom students that are important to students based on their grades. For example, Junior Homeroom students will learn about FASFA and other post high school information as they begin planning for the next steps. Freshmen might learn about the Pre-ACT Test they will be taking.
The great thing about Clipper Time is that students will have a choice in their learning. Tuesday thru Friday, students select which teachers or learning sessions they need to attend. At the same time, for a student who is struggling in an academic area, their teacher can request them to attend a specific learning session during Clipper Time. This will all be explained to students during the first two weeks of the school year where we will be having traditional homerooms each day.
Here is a quick breakdown for each week:
Monday:
- A traditional Homeroom with time to go over team building, grade specific learning topics, teachers check students grades, team building activities.
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
- Staff create specific learning topics based on their content and classes. Students will use time on Monday to sign up for the sessions for the rest of the week. Teachers will also have the ability to request students into specific Clipper Time learning sessions. Here students will get support or study options for each of their classes as well as independent study session, work skills, extended learning opportunities, and small group instruction.
We are excited to offer this learning opportunity for all students.
