October 2019
From the Principal's Desk
I cannot believe we're already into October! Time flies when you're having fun! And, we are certainly having a lot of fun this year! Thanks to everyone for attending our Hacienda Give Back Night and our Beef O'Brady's Give Back Night sponsored by our PTO. I also enjoyed seeing many of you at our Parent Information Nights. Those are always great opportunities to connect with each other and with our teachers.
As we enter the month of October, our next school Life Line will be: Kindness. Life lines are the character traits which drive mastery of the Mary Frank Life Goals: Do the right thing. Treat People Right. Our theme is "ROCKtober" and we're using the "Kindness Rocks!" tagline to emphasize our theme. Stay tuned for fun days ahead!
I would also like to remind you to continue to use the special email address to allow you to email your child's absence to school, rather than calling. We all know how busy mornings can be, so we're hoping this gives you another avenue to communicate with the school. That email address is: maryfrankattendance@phm.k12.in.us. Please provide your child's name, date of absence, and reason in your email.
When making changes with attendance and tranportation, please keep these guidelines in mind.
- Please email by 10:00a.m. if your child is going to be absent from school. You may also email the day after with attached doctor's notes (may also be sent as screen shot) if they will be out for multiple days.
- If there are transportation changes, you must write the teacher a note and send it in with your child OR make a phone call to the office before noon whenever possible. We know emergency situations happen on occaision, but to make sure that all changes are received, we'd like for you to PLEASE communicate with us as soon as possible.
Again, thank you all for being our biggest supporters. Please don't hesitate to reach out any time you have questions or concerns.
In service of your child,
Mrs. Heerschop

A Word about Lunch
You are welcome to come to the cafeteria to have lunch with your child. However, please consider the following:
- The food service regulations we have to follow dictates that students cannot have commercial foods brought into the cafeteria. We respectfully ask that you bring a lunch from home, or feel free to purchase a lunch from our cafeteria when you come to visit.
- They love visits, and we love when you visit...in moderation. Please consider making lunch with your child a "special event" rather than a regular event. The cafeteria is such a great environment for students to interact with each other and practice those social and emotional skills we continue to promote. Our cafeteria is also quite full with students so finding extra spaces for several parents can be difficult. Thank you for taking these things into consideration.
Fundraiser Update
Pokemon Cards - They're BAAAACK!
- Mary Frank staff will not manage the trading of cards.
- If issues do arise with cards (i.e. disruption of learning, excessive arguments, etc), teachers have the right to determine if students can continue playing.
- Like any toy or device brought to school, Mary Frank is not responsible for the replacement of any cards lost, torn, stolen, or "traded."
On October 14th, a vision screening will be performed by the RN assigned to our school - Mrs. Kim Makowski - for grades 1, 3, and 5. This screening allows her to detect correctable vision problems that might be impairing optimal learning. These are vision tests which have been adapted from the Modified Clinical Technique. It provides information on whether a student is falling within certain standardized limits. This does not take the place of an annual comprehensive eye examination. If your child falls outside of the standardized limits, you'll receive a letter letting you know that a visit may need to be made to the family eye doctor for further testing.
- Students must be fever free and/or have not vomited or had diarrhea for 24 hours before returning to school. We appreciate close adherence ot this policy in order to keep everyone healthy.
- Medications cannot be brought to school by students Parents must bring the medication into the office and give it to the Ms. Debi, the Health Aide or office staff if she is unavailable. Appropriate forms must be signed and on file before medication can be dispensed at school.
