Oak Hills Newsletter
October 12, 2018
Principal's Message
Dear Oak Hills Families,
At our school, we teach children important skills for getting along with others and doing well in school. It also helps our school be a safe and supportive place where everyone can learn. An important component of our curriculum is to help children protect their bodies, get support when abuse has occurred, and report to a trusted adult. In accordance with Erin’s Law, we are educating children about sexual abuse and promoting awareness within our communities. The Oregon Department of Education has required all Oregon schools to comply with Erin’s Law.
In these lessons, students will learn three types of skills:
• Personal Safety. Students will learn ways to determine if a situation is safe or not. Students will also practice strategies to avoid peer pressure in unsafe situations.
• Touching Safety. Students will learn about safe, unsafe, and unwanted touches, and rules about touching private body parts. They’ll also learn to say no to unsafe or unwanted touches, and to tell an adult if someone breaks rules about touching private body parts.
• Assertiveness. These lessons will also give students a chance to practice asking an adult for help, telling an adult about an unsafe situation, and being assertive to get out of unsafe situations.
There will be many opportunities for you to examine these lessons. You could go to the district workshops on Health listed below in this newsletter. I will also make the lessons available for viewing in the library during conferences and you can also find them on fightchildabuse.org. Additionally, I will be talking about these lessons at the PTO meeting on October 15.
The requirement of Erin’s Law is four lessons a year at each grade level, K-12. Instruction is scheduled for November 2018 through February 2019. We will be covering these lessons during the last week of November for K-2 and first week of December for 3rd-5th Grade. The lessons will be presented every day that week except on Wednesday as it is a shortened day. There is an Opt Out option available to families. Please make a copy of the form, fill it out and email it to me or your child's teacher and/or print it and send it in. If you choose to opt out your student, our counselor will do alternate lessons with them. Teachers will be sending information on these lessons when we get closer to end of November. Thank you for helping us make our school a safe and supportive place where everyone can learn.
I look forward to seeing you at the PTO meeting on Monday at 3pm and at the Parent Workshop on Reading on Tuesday at 8am.
Warm regards,
Sheila Baumgardner

Reading Workshop for Parents
Interested in Supporting your Child in Reading? Come to this Parent informational session on Tuesday, October 16th, from 8:00-9:00 am, in the Green Room.
Our Intervention Teachers, Toni Fisher and Julie Rawland will give you a variety of ideas for supporting your child in reading. They will address word attack skills, fluency, and comprehension for both fiction and nonfiction text. This session is appropriate for helping all readers further their skills.
Conference Sign Up
Parent Teacher Conferences are fast approaching, and we are using the online scheduler again this year. As a reminder, the official dates for conferences are below:
October 24, 3:30PM -7:30PM
October 25, 7:30AM -7:30PM (No School for Students)
To schedule your conference please click on the following link:
https://www.ptcfast.com/schools/Oak_Hills_Elementary_3
Please follow the steps outlined on the website. If you are having issues with the website, contact your child’s teacher. Unfortunately, our schedule does not allow us to hold separate conferences for divorced or separated families. Please contact the office if there is a court order that mandates an exception to this policy. We look forward to seeing all families at these important meetings. Conferences provide an important opportunity for you to understand how your student is dong both academically and socially. We ask you do not bring your child to your meeting so you can have an honest conversation with your child’s teacher.
Do you have a T-Rex costume you can loan us?
Peace Pole Dedication
Rachel Pines got this process started at Oak Hills last spring. The Peace Pole was planted in September. We will be conducting a dedication ceremony on October 17th, at 9:30 am, to focus on peace in our community and thank the Rotary for their kind donation. Look for a video of this event.
Crosswalk Safety
Another way you can help is to be alert at the corner of Bethany and Oak Hills drive. Our crossing guards have been noticing cars who are slow to stop or roll through the intersection even when flags are down. Please be extra cautious there. Stay on the sidewalks after school. Please do not spill into the street on Oak Hills Drive.
If we all follow these guidelines, I know we can keep our students safe!
Career Fair Volunteers Needed!
Oak Hills will hold its annual Career Fair on November 13th, from 8:15-10:30 a.m.! This will be a great opportunity to highlight a diverse group of careers our students might wish to pursue as important future members of the workforce and global community! We are looking for presenters who are willing and excited to give a presentation about the jobs they do. Groups of students will rotate through your station approximately 8 times, during which you will give a 10 minute presentation to each group.
Some of the questions presenters have used to guide presentations are:
Where do you work?
What is your job title?
What do you?
What did you have to do to prepare for a job in your field? (Post-high school)
How has the shift in technology impacted your job?
How do you impact the community?
How is your job interconnected with other jobs?
If you are interested in participating in this informative and engaging day, and helping prepare our students for college and career readiness, please email our School Counselor, Shelly Ray, at shelly_ray@beaverton.k12.or.us with the Subject: Career Fair Volunteer+Your Name.
