A Message from the Principal...
Dear friends,
We are headed into our final three weeks of school before Winter Break. Teachers, we launch our Learning Cycles this Thursday during Professional Time. These three-week cycles were based on your feedback on our first quarter Professional Time survey. Many of you expressed a desire for time to delve more deeply into a specific area. You also wanted an opportunity to learn something new and apply your learning in the classroom. We also surveyed you about your interests and came up with a variety of topics to explore. Depending on what session you signed up for, you will be spending 1 session learning and 2 sessions creating something to apply in our classroom or 2 sessions learning and 1 session applying your new learning. A link to the sessions is included below. The Joint Team will ask you for feedback at the end of these sessions and as we head into quarter 3, so we can be sure our Professional Time is most valuable. Please reach out to a Shared Governance representative if you have any questions.
I hope you all have a wonderful week.
Sincerely,

CHARACTER COUNTS
Thank you to those of you who have nominated students for Character Counts awards. We had a great time delivering these awards prior to the break and the students who received them certainly appreciated the recognition. The Character Counts awards are a way for students to be recognized by staff for showing fairness, responsibility, trustworthiness, citizenship, respect and caring. Nominations will be picked up from the workroom at the end of every month. New slips will be placed in your mailbox and there are always extra forms in the workroom. If you have any questions please contact Matti at mamiller@powayusd.com.

Book of the Month: City of Ember written by Jeanne DuPrau
Summary: Many hundreds of years ago, the city of Ember was created by the Builders to contain everything needed for human survival. It worked…but now the storerooms are almost out of food, crops are blighted, corruption is spreading through the city and worst of all—the lights are failing. Soon Ember could be engulfed by darkness…
But when two children, Lina and Doon, discover fragments of an ancient parchment, they begin to wonder if there could be a way out of Ember. Can they decipher the words from long ago and find a new future for everyone? Will the people of Ember listen to them? " (goodreads).
