PRINCIPALLY SPEAKING
It is hard to believe the 2018-19 academic year will conclude in a few weeks. I want to thank you for your continued support and encouragement. I am proud to be a Sunflower Eagle for many reasons, chief among them the dedication and passion this community has for its students and staff. Your actions, words, and attitudes reflect your commitment to our school community.
Below is a sample of the accomplishments of our school:
Eagle Pride Assemblies to celebrate all students
All school Constitution Day gathering at the flag pole with First Responders and members of the Armed Forces serving as the color guard
Schoolwide Safety Week and activities
Polar Express memories for all grades
PTO organized a fantastic Walkathon and carnival to support fundraisers, classroom cash, spirit wear for all students and MORE!
Honored grandparents with their own special day filled with activities
Celebrated our Spelling Bee contestants
Filled the Gardner Edgerton Multi-Service Center Pantry through our food and hygiene drive
Watch D.O.G.S. & Eagle M.O.M.S. serve as positive role models
Encouraged student talents during quarterly "Sunflower's Got Talent" sessions
Attended multiple grade level field trips
Supported the Scholastic Book Fair
4th Grade Choir performances
Sunflower Night at the Public Library & "All On the Same Page" reading initiative
Parents/guardians facilitating Novel Navigators and Chat & Chew book clubs
Eagle Tickets for positive behavior celebrations
Provided academic leveled support during TEAM time in the areas of reading and math
Spectacular grade level musicals
As we wrap up the last few weeks of school, please continue to encourage your child to put forth his or her best behavior and effort every day because that is the Eagle Way! Lastly, I would like to wish our fourth graders the best of luck as they transition to middle school. I know they will represent Sunflower well. Their energy, spirit, and leadership will be missed.

ATTENDANCE AWARDS
At the end of the school year, Sunflower will be recognizing two different types of attendance awards.
For those students who have no more than a total of 3 tardies, or no more than a total of 3 absences, or no more than a combined total of 3 tardies/absences, they will receive the "Exemplary Attendance" award certificate. These aren’t separate categories that will be awarded...it’s more like the formula that we use.
A “Perfect Attendance” award will be given to any student who is present at school every minute of every school day. This award will consist of an award certificate, a medal, and a chance at a drawing for one of our Summer Baskets.
As you may remember, attendance award winners were given vouchers for a free Royals ticket. The Kansas City Royals organization recently ended their attendance award program because they felt it could be too limiting. A member of the Royals' Community Relations team responded by saying, "sometimes students are great students, but can’t help it if they have to miss a day due to sickness or other concerns outside of their control."
