The end of the school year is always so bittersweet for me. I love looking back at how much our children grow academically, socially and emotionally. However, that also means it is time to say goodbye for a couple of months and when school resumes in August, students will have grown even more. This year is even more bittersweet because we said goodbye to our students for spring break, expecting to see them again 10 days later and that is not what happened.
Thank you to all of our families and staff for pulling together and working to make sure that our students continued to learn and feel cared for and comforted during these past 2 months. Every time I spoke to someone, whether it was a member of one of our families or a staff member, the conversations, while sometimes uncertain, were always talking about how well everyone was doing and what they were doing to help each other.
Administration will continue to work with staff to prepare for next school year. We will follow the guidelines given to us by the state and federal governments as well as the Department of Education. We do not know what the new school year will bring, but please rest assured that we will be ready for it and we will keep you up to date!
Thank you to all of our families and staff for helping us make this such a wonderful year. We appreciate you being a part of the school. Staff, students and parents have worked together to make our events fun and successful. We had our Parent Appreciation breakfast and ate eggs and hash browns cooked by Mr. Jack and breads which our students made as part of the Title IV Healthy Snacks program. We enjoyed student performances, coffee and donuts, movie nights, and Pumpkin Palooza. We enjoyed Taco Tuesday and of course our annual tamale making, lasagna baking, and cookie decorating!
We had a wonderful turn out for the end of the year ZOOM performance. The students did a great job and it was fun seeing everyone! If you were unable to attend, we are working to get the video posted so you can enjoy the performances too.
Our referral program is still in effect; contact the school for details! Remember: referrals make the best students so invite your friends to visit and take a tour!
Please keep your contact information up to date so we can contact you about events planned for the summer and when it is time to register for the 2020-2021 school year.
Kindergarten & 1st Grade Class
As my first year as a teacher comes to an end, I cannot help but reflect and acknowledge one of the beautiful and fulfilling years I have had. This is because of each and every one of my students, as well as all the students and staff at Academy Adventures Midtown. Being part of and watching children transform, explore, develop and mature is truly magical.
Over the 2019-2020 academic year, we have encountered so much, and seemingly the impossible.
We have met all of our SuperKid friends that have educated Kindergarten on letters such as writing, sounds and blending beginning words to make us efficient readers. The same SuperKids have made our first graders some of the strongest readers and increased our understanding on nouns, verbs, pronouns, compound words, rhyming words, syllables and so much more. We were provided the opportunities to explore some of my favorite books from Roald Dahl and Amelia Badelia from when I was in their seats.
My kindergarteners and first graders are mathematical wizards! We have met and excelled many of the standards, such as sequential counting, adding, subtracting, number sentences and place value. My all time favorite part of math instruction was sitting in our math groups and watching every single students’ face light up when they conquered math when they felt they could not.
We made and used so much playdough throughout the year, that I truly believe that this combined class has become absolute geniuses in utilizing this sensory skill for making letters and words, visualizing and creating settings for characters, and using the playdough as a coping skill when emotions in the classroom became too much.
I am truly privileged to have watched the unity in the classroom, as we continually worked on promoting friendship, acceptance, and tolerance through various Social Studies skills. This was beautifully displayed in our Thanksgiving mock dinner, Stone Soup Day, Tamale Making day and our whole school art projects!
In our classroom, we played with so much shaving cream! We used shaving cream in A LOT of our science experiments and handwriting exercising. The students had so much fun with the shaving cream, but little did the students know the shaving cream doubled as a fun cleaning of the desks ;)!
This last quarter of the year has truly been one for the books! I am blessed to know the support that our school provided during a global crisis. I am humbled and proud that we made it through this healthy and with many opportunities to continue our educational path!
With that, I am beyond honored to have not only been your child’s teacher, but a part of a beautiful year at Academy Adventures Midtown. I cannot wait to see you all next year! Thank you all! Can I get a HOLY CANOLLI one last time for Academy Adventures Midtown 2019-2020?!?
2nd & 3rd Grade Class
Where did the year go? It traveled by so quickly. I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed working with my students this year. It was an honor and a privilege to be their teacher. I will always remember this group of students. They were a fun and loving group. I really enjoyed all the wonderful and fun events at school this year.
I will never forget the looks on the students faces when we opened the back door to the Pumpkin Palooza! My heart was full of happiness, as I observed the expressions of glee and joy on their faces. What a wonderful, fun time!
I will also remember a wonderful Spaghetti Dinner with an awesome Dinner Magic Show included. We had a full house that night and as the night buzzed with students, parents, anticipation, and excitement, it was truly magical in every sense of the word. Thank you to our amazing resident magician for serving us with his astounding array of magical entertainment!
I know the students enjoyed recess everyday with such a great playground to run, leap, play with hula hoops, slide, play ball, swing and so many other wonderful activities...... I know recess is one of their favorite subjects in school ;) wink, wink!
Students enjoyed some fun science experiments and STEM science as well. I know students loved having nutritious, delicious, homemade snacks they got to help Ms. Dina make.
What about that fantastic field trip to visit Bookmans and the China Buffet restaurant. I had fun helping many of the students make their first ice-cream cone, from the ice-cream machine. That was such an amazing field trip!
All in all, I would say we had a pretty terrific school year at Academy Adventures Midtown. I was blessed to teach the students at Academy Adventure Midtown. We certainly had many adventures together this year!
I hope you all have a wonderful, healthy summer and stay safe! Hopefully, life will return to normal again and maybe some of us will head out for a fun summer vacation.
Thank you to all of my students and their parents for a terrific school year! Blessings to you all, always!
4th & 5th Grade Class
Here we are at the end of the school year. I am so grateful and overjoyed to be your child’s teacher this year. It has been fantastic working with them and teaching them new things. Thank you for your help in preparing your child for the next steps in their journey.
In CKLA, we learned how to write personal narratives and tell stories about things that have happened in our lives. We have learned how to use words to paint a picture in our reader’s mind. We learned about The Middle Ages and castles, knights, as well as the Early Civilizations of the Maya, the Aztecs, the Incas and the myths that they believed. We learned about the Islamic Empires in the Middle Ages, the decline of the Roman Empire and events such as the Crusades and read contemporary fiction and excerpts from various stories and comparing and contrasting stories.
In GoMath, we worked with place value and rounding. We practiced our multiplication facts to help us with multiplying one- and two- digit numbers. We used multiplication to help us divide numbers. We compared numbers, used expanded form, and estimated. We worked with fractions and decimals and did I mention multiplication? We multiplied in so many different ways that we became quite the experts.
Our class also learned things not taught in textbooks. Things like compassion, talking about how and why something is an issue, determination, having a positive attitude and working together. I am so proud of our class and I look forward to seeing what everyone accomplishes next!

Title IVA - Healthy Snack Program
The students gained a lot of great nutritional and baking knowledge the first three (3) quarters of school through our Healthy Snack Program. We hope they have been sharing those skills with you and helping out in the kitchen during the last few months!
Below is another one of the recipes the children learned to make and loved. Ask them to make it for you and your family!
CRANBERRY ORANGE COOKIES
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 large egg
- 3 tablespoons orange juice (Fresh Squeezed)
- 1 tablespoon grated orange zest
- 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup dried cranberries, finely chopped
Directions:
· Preheat oven to 350°. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg, orange juice concentrate and orange zest. In another bowl, whisk flour, cornstarch, baking powder, baking soda and salt; gradually beat into creamed mixture. Stir in cranberries.
· Shape level tablespoons of dough into balls; place 2 in. apart on ungreased baking sheets. Coat bottom of a glass with cooking spray, then dip in flour. Press cookies with bottom of glass to flatten, redipping in flour as needed. Bake 8-10 minutes or until edges are golden brown. Remove from pans to wire racks to cool completely.
School Improvement Plan
School Improvement will continue through the summer and coming school year. Academy Adventures Midtown continues to work with the Arizona Department of Education School Improvement Division to ensure we continue to meet all the requirements! With all State Assessments (AzM2 & AIMS Science) being cancelled this year, our school grade will remain the same and we will not be able to improve it for next year. It is frustrating because we know how hard the students worked this year.
If you have any questions regarding school improvement, please speak with Mrs. Campbell or Mrs. Angela.
