How to Work a Career Fair

Fun App of the Week

Download "Resume Star: Pro CV and Resume Design," for free on the apple app store. This app allows you to input your information and qualifications, and then creates a professional looking resume for you. With different templates that you can choose from, this app gives you complete stylistic control. Making a resume is not always easy and this is a great tool to help you out.

Etiquette Tip of the Week

Apparently, there is a new way to return a call when you get a call back on a resume or client pitch. A woman who handles the incoming phone calls in her office told me people call and say, "Did someone call me from here?" They have no idea who or where they are calling, because they just saw, "Missed message" and hit "Redial."

"Shouldn't you know," she asks the caller, "since you called here?"

There is a better way to make a second impression:

Listen to your messages, especially when you are in the hunt for a new job or new client. Before calling back, look at any notes you have on the company and collect your thoughts.

Announce yourself to the person who answers the phone.

“Hello, this is (first name, last name). May I please speak to John Hall?”

Add your company name if calling for business.

“Hello, this is (first name, last name). I am calling from X Company…”

Be kind to everyone, but especially the people who answer the phones. They are the gatekeepers. Sometimes they determine whether the person you want to reach is reachable or not. If you do get your foot in the door, be attentive to the gatekeepers. Learn their names and present your business card. You will be amazed what they can do for your career.

A New Way to Write a Cover Letter

A traditional cover letter sometimes lacks the spark and attention grabbing ability that your bullet-point headlining resume does. But, as Justin Zackal formulates, if bullet-points work for a resume, why would they not work for a cover letter as well?

Read the article in the link below to learn more about a different method of writing a cover letter and to gain insight with other helpful tips on cover letters in general.
