Important Information about Electronic Cigarettes and "Dab Pens"
We want to make everyone aware of an important, dangerous issue we are seeing in increasing amounts at CHS. We are having more and more issues of students in possession of electronic cigarettes or vapes as well as students in possession of “Dab Pens”. Both items are in violation of BISD Student Code of Conduct and are illegal in Texas.
It is illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to be in possession of an electronic cigarette whether on campus or not. Students who are caught with an e-cig will have it confiscated, will be punished according to the BISD Student Code of Conduct, and will have the matter turned over to the Burleson Police Department. There is an increasing amount of information about the dangerous nature of these products.
Dab pens are a much more serious issue. A dab pen is something which is used purely for the consumption of dabs. Dabs are tiny little concentrates of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana. The chemical is consumed in this fashion instead of your more traditional dry herb or e-liquid. A dab pen is made up of the same components as a vape pen, and works more or less in the same way.
In Texas, even possessing THC concentrates in any amount or form is a felony for anyone, regardless of age, which many people don't realize until after they are charged. A misdemeanor charge will result in a fine up to $1,000 and a possible jail sentence of up to six months. Students in possession of a dab pen will be placed at Right Turn Discipline Center. The pen will be sent to the Burleson Police Department lab for testing. If the results show any amount of THC, the student will be sent to a Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Center for at least 45 school days. There is one JJAEP center in Cleburne (for Johnson County residents) and another in Fort Worth (for Tarrant County residents).
We encourage each of you to please discuss the health dangers of these products with your child as well as the consequences of possession of these items at school. Our goal is to always have students on campus and in class, however, we will do all that we can to protect the health of students as well as making sure we follow the law.
Homecoming Information

Voting will open on Monday, October 7th and close on Wednesday, October 9th. The top 3 male and female vote recipients will be on the 2019 Homecoming Court. On Monday, October 14th, voting will open for the King and Queen and will close on Wednesday, October 16th. The King and Queen will be announced at halftime of the Varsity Football Game on Friday, October 18th.
PSAT/ASVAB Tests on October 16th
PSAT:
All students in grades 9-11 will be taking the PSAT on October 16. Students are automatically signed up for the test, there is no charge to the student and no action is required. Freshman will be taking the PSAT 8/9. Sophomores and Juniors will be taking the PSAT/NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test). Only Juniors are eligible for the National Merit Scholarship Program.
LUNCHES on PSAT testing day
All 9th through 11 grade students will need to bring a lunch from home or plan on purchasing a sack lunch from the cafeteria before the test starts. No outside lunch deliveries will be accepted on test day.
Why is the PSAT Important?
The PSAT stands for Preliminary SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test). It is a good resource to use when preparing and studying for the SAT. You can even link your PSAT results to Khan Academy to get personalized SAT prep.
JUNIORS!
For Juniors taking the PSAT/NMSQT your scores could qualify you for the National Merit Scholarship Program. The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and college scholarships. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) during their Junior year.
PSAT Calculators:
Centennial will have a LIMITED NUMBER of calculators for the Juniors to use on the PSAT/NMSQT. Freshman and Sophomore students will not be provided calculators but may bring their own to the test. Students are highly encouraged to bring their own calculator as use of a school calculator is NOT guaranteed. Students bringing personal calculators must ensure that they follow College Board Calculator Guidelines.
For more information. . .
Click here to review the PSAT Student Guides. If you would like a paper copy of the Student Guide you can pick one up in the front office of CHS.
Rosters with room assignments for all students will be posted in the cafeteria, front hallway, and by the C and D hall elevators on Thursday, October 10. Please review the rosters and contact Kari Trevino or Stephanie Jurgens if you have any questions.
PSAT will begin PROMPTLY at 8:55am. It is VERY important to be on time!
Seniors All 12th grade students will take the ASVAB on October 16 at 8:55 a.m. (unless you complete THIS OPT OUT FORM by October 2nd). A common misconception is that the ASVAB is only for military purposes; however, it is beneficial for all students. The career exploration scores can help determine readiness for further education and training in different career areas. The ASVAB is similar to standardized tests like the SAT, but it measures an individual’s potential rather than accumulated knowledge. Seniors CHS will not be releasing ASVAB scores to the Military. These scores are only released to the student for use in college and career planning. If you would like information on how to release your scores to the military, please contact Ms. Jurgens. For more information. . . Please visit: https://www.asvabprogram.com/ If you did not receive one in your English class and would like a paper copy of the ASVAB Overview Guide you can pick one up in the College and Career Center. Rosters with room assignments for all students will be posted in the cafeteria, front hallway, and by the C and D hall elevators on Thursday, October 10th. Please review the rosters and contact Kari Trevino or Stephanie Jurgens if you have any questions. ASVAB will begin PROMPTLY at 8:55am (this includes students with 1st out) Please be on time!
Chromebook Information
Students on Campus Prior To and After School Hours
The last class of the day ends at 4:15 p.m. Students who are not participating in a school sponsored activity or with a teacher for tutorials should exit the building and leave campus by 4:45 p.m.
Students who choose to remain in the building after hours will be asked to exit the building.
New Tardy Policy
CHS has partnered with Student Conductor in the implementation of a new, more effective tardy processing system. Here are the things that you need to know.
There are multiple tardy check-in kiosk stations located throughout the school.
When tardy, the student will use the nearest check-in kiosk station to get them back into class efficiently.
Every time a student is tardy, an email is sent to a parent/guardian notifying them that the student was tardy. Any discipline assigned will also be notified to the parent/guardian.
If a discipline is being assigned for the student being tardy then the student must serve the discipline by the appointed time. If a student needs to reschedule a discipline, they are required to arrange with their House Office PRIOR to the original time of the discipline they were to have served. Failure to do so may result in an escalation of discipline. This system allows your principals, coaches, sponsors, counselors, and parents to easily track what disciplines have been served thereby increasing accountability.
The process is simple when a student is tardy.
Teachers will close their door when the tardy bell rings. Students who are late must then go to the nearest Tardy Station.
Scan or type the Student ID into the Tardy Station.
The student takes the tardy receipt and reads the discipline that has been assigned for being tardy.
The student reports to class and shows the tardy receipt to their teacher as a pass to class.
The student serves the assigned discipline, if applicable.
Keep in mind that all tardy stations are monitored and further discipline will occur with the improper use of a check-in tardy station.
Consequences of tardiness can be avoided by students showing up on time for class.
Tardy Consequences - total tardies per six weeks across all classes - starts over each six weeks

Tardy 7 - One After School Detention - Tuesdays/Thursdays 4:30-5:30
Tardy 8 - Two After School Detentions - Tuesdays/Thursdays 4:30-5:30
