The Dragon's Tale
The Biweekly Newsletter of the Kaohsiung American School
2019-2020, Issue #9: December 13th
Congratulations to all of the students who shared their talents and their creativity with us at this year’s Winter Concert. Yet again, KAS students have shown us their creativity, their skills, and the excellent results of their hard work. We think that during the Winter Concert, there is no better place to be in the entire world than in the KAS Auditorium enjoying the joyful spirit that our students bring to the community with their passion and their work. Thank you to the teachers especially the music department for their diligence in guiding students to be ready for this event.
Happy Southern Taiwan Model United Nations (STMUN) weekend to the KAS community. We are happy to cohost this year’s STMUN conference, and we look forward to welcoming hundreds of students to KAS this weekend to discuss this year’s theme: United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #3 - Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. We are proud of our students in STMUN as they engage in these challenging issues. STMUN is a BIG part of our school mission, especially the ‘G’ part of Global Citizens. Our students in STMUN are leaders in preparing to create a more aware, ethical, and cooperative future, and we honor their efforts. Thank you to the faculty sponsors and the support staff who tirelessly support our students in making this event into a reality.
祝STMUN(南台灣模擬聯合國會議)週末活動順利。

Meet Grace Harn (2015)
Grace recently graduated from the University of Toronto in Canada, one of the top 30 universities in the world, where she double-majored in physiology and pharmacology. Not one to back down from a challenge, we caught up with Grace recently and learned she is preparing for medical school next year with the goal of eventually opening her own clinical practice.
Grace says that KAS, and especially her dedicated teachers, were a critical part of her path to success. "My teachers at KAS were always willing to give me extra support...not only did this help me with school but also with building valuable relationships with my teachers. Having learned this, I went to my professors, too, when I was in university. Asking questions, having discussions, and hearing more from my professors significantly improved my understanding of the material and helped me form connections with many professors." By building trusting, meaningful relationships with her teachers, Grace was able to pivot that experience into intellectual curiosity and a love of lifelong learning.
Like many students at KAS that take a challenging set of IB-level classes as they prepare for college, Grace was no exception, but it wasn't always easy. "KAS helped me cope with setbacks," shared Grace. "Doing well in IB Math HL was particularly hard for me. My teacher (Mrs. Kuiken) patiently went through each test question with me after school and motivated me to keep learning despite the marks I was getting. Learning with the motive to learn and grow, rather than just for good marks, helped me handle setbacks, enjoy learning, and eventually improve marks-wise as well. Having this attitude prepared for university where courses were even more rigorous and challenging."
Not only does Grace now have her sights set on medical school; she also dreams of starting a non-profit organization to educate and support families with mothers recovering from brain injuries, a cause near and dear to her family. Grace still fondly thinks of her early-years teachers like Ms. Melody and Ms. Hung who always gave a friendly smile or stopped for a chat even as she entered high school and later graduated from KAS. Once a dragon, always a dragon!

Another college application season is just wrapping up as we are finishing applications to the US and Canada. We had called for an early deadline of Friday, Dec 13 for KAS students as it will allow Ms Newman and I to tie up loose ends with applicants until next Friday. Please encourage your children to come and see us before the Christmas break so we can finalize all of their applications and allow them (and you!) to have a peaceful vacation. First semester grades will be ready at the end of the month and will be sent to each university electronically. Any applications that must be sent by mail are the student’s responsibility and they are to see Ms Denise Wu to facilitate this process.
A few students are still working on UK, Japanese and HK applications and we are available to them to help them through the process as well.
Please do not change their existing application list by adding other colleges over the vacation. Many parents and students get nervous over the break about not being accepted to any of their colleges. Careful consultation has been taken by us to work out the best fit for choices for your sons & daughters. If it is changed over the break, we will not know about it and no documents will be sent in. There should be no “emergencies” over the break so please try to enjoy the time with your family. We are looking forward to the outcomes for the graduating class of 2020.
Ms. Newman and I would like to thank KAS parents for your support throughout this whole process. We have enjoyed working with the entire senior class.
Have a safe and peaceful Christmas holiday!
