Greenville Reading Warriors Program
Each participating student will use a reading log to keep track of their success. Upon completion, the reading log should be returned to Ms. Knight in the library by October 31st.
Students are also encouraged to take part in a book drive on the night of the celebration game. If they bring five or more children's books to donate, they'll receive a buy one get one free ticket voucher. Donated books will be given to the "Friends of the Library" and sold and their annual book sale. All proceeds from the book sale will benefit the Greenville County Library System.
Teacher incentive: If 50% of a class completes this reading program, the teacher will be rewarded with a free ticket to the Reading Warriors Game Night Event!
Reading Challenge update
This nine weeks, students will have the option to read 30 books OR 500 pages. (It may be difficult for older students to read 30 books and still challenge themselves to read "meatier" fare.) Next quarter, K5-2nd grade students will still try to read 30 books (or more), and 3rd-5th grade students will have a quarterly goal of 500 pages.
To print a copy of this quarter's reading challenge sheet, go to http://forkshoalsreads.blog.greenville.k12.sc.us/files/2013/08/1st_quarter_book_challenge.pdf.
Book of the Week: EllRay Jakes Is NOT a Chicken!
EllRay Jakes Is NOT a Chicken!, the first book in a new series by Sally Warner and illustrator Jamie Harper, is a nominee for the 2013-2014 South Carolina Children’s Book Award.
EllRay Jakes is the smallest kid in his third grade class at Oak Glen Primary School, and he’s become the target of a couple of bullies. EllRay isn’t even sure how it started, but he knows that he can’t really tell anyone about it–especially adults–because they’ll just make things even worse.
EllRay‘s problems at school are getting him into trouble, but his dad may have just given him the incentive he needs to keep his nose clean. If EllRay can stay out of trouble for one whole week, Dad will take the family to Disneyland! Now, that’s definitely something to work toward, but can EllRay do it?
Can EllRay stay away from the bullies, behave in class, and keep his temper for an entire week? And when the adults around him get wind that EllRay might be having problems with bullying, what will happen? Will the bullies finally stop, or will things get worse than ever? Can EllRay Jakes prove he’s not a chicken while staying out of trouble? Time will tell…
