"If you have a child's heart, you have his head." ~ Flip Flippen
With Apprecation:
- KAREN, we are so pleased that you were able to take on more hours in the front office. You are a tremendous asset to our office team and you are awesome with our students and parents when they are feeling hurt or scared!
- You've got this CAFETERIA TEAM! Our kids love your yummy lunches, and we appreciate how you are always seeking ways to make things better and easier and yummier!
- IRMA thank you for sharing your library and AV cart with the staff - we appreciate you!
New Information/Things to Do:
- LOCAL EDUCATIONAL CONFERENCE: William Jessup University is hosting a conference all about education, with a strong focus on K-8 on Saturday, 10/7 from 8-3:30. I plan to attend, and the district is willing to cover the cost for participation ($50) and to offer hours towards credit. Let Jen know if you'd like to attend - I'll get you registered. More info here!
- LEADERSHIP TEAM: Thank you to Aly, Dayna, Julie, Kate, Laura Shye, Liz, and Lorri for agreeing to serve on our site leadership team. All staff are welcome to attend meetings - our first is on Thursday, 9/28 from 2:50-3:50 pm in the tech room.
- GHOST PEPPERS: Apparently, ghost pepper tastings are a new (and potentially very dangerous) thing at TBMS. If you hear of students talking about ghost peppers, please do not hesitate to interject into the conversation to ensure they understand that peppers of this caliber are unsafe for eating. I'd also encourage you to contact the parent via email to give them a heads up.
- POTLUCK on 9/22: Salads are on the menu. Visit this google doc to sign up to bring something to share.
- COLT PRIDE TICKETS: Please be sure your students put any tickets they've earned into a bucket (let Jen know if you need one) - we'll ask every staff member to pull 2 tickets on Friday, 9/29; winning ticket holders will be invited to the red tables at 2:30 on Friday to enjoy a special cool treat!
Older Stuff/Reminders
- WORK ORDERS: Staff can access the work order for Markus on your staff drive under “CUSTODIAL WORK ORDER” folder. It is a typeable form then you can just email it to Markus.

- iSAFE LESSONS: See Annie's email for the PDF lessons, or visit Common Sense Media online here. Pleae get your verification back to Annie by the end of September.
- SECRET PRIZE: This week, it's hiding on the lamination cart...thanks for reading!
- THIS & THAT SURVEY: We are looking for some input...please take 2 minutes to complete this survey.
- LIBRARY BOOKS: on your library day, please deliver your 'books to be returned' in the morning so that Irma can get them checked in and can focus her time with your students on library skills and sharing stories.
- MISSING STUDENT? If you are not certain where a student is (i.e. they don't return from lunch/recess/prep) but there was no note left for you or no one contacted you, please give the office a call so we can ensure we know where everyone is.
- FIELD BOUNDARIES: Please talk with your team about where the boundaries are on the field, and be sure you communicate those to your students. If you open the field, please ensure there is adequate and watchful supervision.

To Consider:
You all know I was a science teacher for a long time I think...I'm still very much a science and STEM nerd, and proud of it. A few things I've come across recently that might be of interest:
- a case for science education in elementary school
- bring amazing science from the CA Academy of Sciences into your classroom through webcams of penguins and other animals, virtual lessons and virtual field trips
- Looking for educational and enrichment oriented fun Friday activities? Consider PBS Kids science games, Hour of Code (for pre-readers through high school age), Code.org (a portal into all things coding), fun elementary aged STEM activities, and all things Rubix Cube (including the option to borrow a class set of Rubix Cubes with lesson plans attached - what?!?!)
Mrs. Sliepen and the other 5th grade classes are capping off their introduction to pre-Columbian settlements including cliff dwellers, Native Americans, nomadic nations and woodland peoples.
Teaching the History Standards through an ELA Lens
Students researched their tribe's economy, customs, social structure and physical environment. Using their research, they prepared posters and group presentations to share their knowledge with their peers!
