CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION
Tennessee is one of several states to enact a law, collectively known as Erin’s Law (see attachment below) requiring public schools to provide age-appropriate child sexual abuse education for children in school. To comply, Rutherford County Schools has adopted a preventative curriculum for our elementary schools called the Second Step Child Protection Unit.
The four key concepts in the curriculum are (1) Ways to Stay Safe, (2) The “Always Ask First” Rule, (3) Safe and Unsafe Touches, and (4) The Touching Rules. These concepts are covered in all grades K-5, but the lessons for each grade level are developmentally appropriate, which is why this particular curriculum was chosen. If you do not want your child to participate in these lessons, please complete the bottom portion of the attached letter and return it to your child's teacher. You may print the attachment or ask your child's teacher to send a hard copy home with your student.
Parents can view the curriculum online by going to www.secondstep.org and logging in and creating an account. Enter your grade-level activation key below to view program resources. If you have any questions about Child Protection Unit or the Second Step program, you may contact Mrs. Akers, School Counselor.

BOOKS FROM BIRTH
Once again, our district has been asked to support our local Imagination Library, Rutherford Books from Birth. Their goal is to raise a dollar for every child in the school system. For us, that is approximately $50,000. The monies that we put into this fundraiser directly impact the students of our school district in a positive way. March, which is National Reading Month is a perfect time to kick off this fundraiser!
