Community Art Project
Students and staff at Riverhead High School are expressing their feelings about the COVID-19 pandemic through a collective art mural.
The project, organized by high school art teacher Jo-Ann Dellaposta, encourages participants to share how they’re feeling through one-word images on 3.5-inch cards.
The cards will be displayed in the school’s hallways along the background of a blue wave. High school students and staff who have not yet contributed to the project may still add to the mural.

Meet Charlene!
Charlene is a lab and golden retriever mix who is being taught the puppy basic skills and commands she will need to be a successful service dog. As a puppy raiser, Mrs. Wallace provides the care, socialization and basic training that a future assistance dog requires. An essential part of the puppy’s learning is to accompany the puppy raiser to various public places. At 18 months of age, Charlene will go back to Companions for Independence, CCI in Medford, NY and enter advanced training (Puppy College) where she will sharpen her skills and graduate as a service dog knowing over 40 commands. Companions for Independence, is a non-profit organization that provides highly trained assistance dogs for people with disabilities free of charge to their recipients. This is made possible through volunteers and donations. A crucial part of the CCI training process is to teach the dogs to behave appropriately in all public situations, including the workplace or school setting.
An essential part of Charlene’s learning is to accompany the puppy raiser to various public places. The puppy joins her trainer during the workday instilling appropriate socialization skills, learning not to be overly excited around people and developing self-control. Since the puppy will someday work with a person with a disability, it is taught to ignore other people and focus only on the handler. The puppy and students are both taught when it is appropriate for play, or “release” time and when it is time to be serious and “get to work”. All the students look forward to Charlene’s visits, her wagging tail, and having her sit at their feet during instruction time.
