Did you know that trees have their own national holiday? Explore the history and traditions of Arbor Day and view In The Spring by artist Grant Wood. This is an excellent opportunity to utilize Visual Thinking Strategies in the classroom while exploring social study topics such as Recycling and Reforestation. Students will enjoy a reading of The Giving Tree, by Shel Silverstein. Students will watch to learn how to create a multi-media tree sculpture using recycled and recyclable materials.

Coral reefs are described as the “tropical rainforests of the ocean.” Join us on a journey into this valuable habitat as we investigate the diversity of corals, learn their anatomy, and compare and contrast the differences between Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean reefs.
Students will participate in a reef building activity by using LEGOS and construct their own colorful and unique coral habitat while viewing our coral exhibits!

Math at the Zoo

Math is used every day at the Fort Worth Zoo! Come inside our park and see how statistics, percents, place value, and measurements are used for the care and well-being of our animals. Students will use actual data on our animals in this lesson. This interactive program includes a live animal presentation!

Animal Encounters: Reptile Lifestyle

Reptiles are a diverse group of animals, displaying great variety between species; think about turtles versus snakes! During the program, we will take an up-close look at our live critters and compare their various body structures and their functions. We will investigate and explore how they eat, how they survive in their environment/habitat, and how they protect themselves from predators.

Hank the Cowdog's Ranch Life Escapades of Cowboys and Horses

Join us as Hank the Cowdog, the Head of Ranch Security, teaches in a fun way about cowboys and horses in a new ranch life book. Saddle up for some fun as everyone's favorite head of Ranch Security gives readers a glimpse into the world of horses and the life of a working cowboy. Hank’s vibrant author John Erickson will sing songs accompanying himself on the banjo and read from various books using the voices of the characters. Reading is exciting with Hank the Cowdog stories! Join us on this ranching life adventure!

Insects are among the most common animals on earth with nearly one million species known and many more yet to be discovered. Insects share many characteristics that make them unique creatures. We will capture and share a variety of insects commonly found at Guadalupe River State Park, from grasshoppers and butterflies to damselflies and dragonflies. Your students will learn about their adaptations, diversity and their oh-so-important roles in the natural world.
