SCHLEGEL SAFARI
JUNE 2019
A letter from your Principals!
Greeting Schlegel Families,
We are grateful to all of you for another wonderful year! Your children have brought us joy, laughter and treasured moments each day. As the final days of the school year are upon us, we hope you are able to join in the culminating activities such as the Flag Day ceremony (9:30) and school picnic(during your child's lunch) on Friday, June 14. Be sure to review the calendar online for other events or look for information from your child's teacher.
Thank you for our PTSA for supporting the students and staff this year. We appreciate the family nights, special events and funding of cultural arts events. How wonderful for our students to be given the opportunity to visit a variety of places in our community along with having special events at our school thanks to the PTSA!
Enjoy the last days of school!
With smiles,
Francine Leggett & Robin Jennings

WHISKER'S WELLNESS CORNER
JUNE 2019
Whisker’s Wellness Corner Scheduled vs laid-back summer: Balancing activities with simple summertime fun
The summer vacations of our youth were a seemingly endless period of relaxation, leisurely bike rides around the neighborhood and time to do all the things we never got the chance to accomplish during the school year.
And those lazy days of summer remain important for children now to experience, according to Milwaukee-area experts.
'Kids are so stressed nowadays in school, taking AP classes, getting into AP classes, the stresses of sports practices and games, that by the end of the school year, there's so much burnout. They're just exhausted,' said Bridget O'Brien of Shoreview Pediatrics in Milwaukee.
And that burnout is why Wauwatosa psychologist Jeanne Herzog recommends a healthy dose of 'chill time' for kids during the summer months.
'What I hear from kids is that they really do want to be able to chill and play. Most kids don't want to go to summer school, but some kids don't even want to have to go to swimming lessons at eight in the morning. They want freedom,' she said.
Of course there can also be too much of a good thing. Sure, it's great to relax after a long school year, but parents don't want their kids to fall into a summer of lying around, playing video games and uttering the inevitable summer mantra – 'I'm bored.'
There's also the fact that for a lot of families, parents' work schedules don't allow for a summer of unstructured downtime, and for those kids — who O'Brien refers to as Type A, go-go-go personalities — too much relaxation doesn't really meet their needs.
Herzog points out that summer can be a time to continue the structure of the school year, but in a way that is led by children's interests.
'Sometimes kids like to be busy, sometimes they like to be active and involved. If kids are expressing a strong interest, I think it's good to pay attention because this is where kids start exploring new interests,' she said.

A Note from your School Nurses
June
Tdap
As a reminder to the parents/guardians of students entering 6th grade next September, NYS is requiring each student to have a Tdap booster (Tetanus, Diptheria, and Pertussis), as required by PUBLIC HEALTH LAW 2164, and provide the health office with documentation from the physician regarding the immunization. Pertussis is always present in the community and can cause substantial illness among adolescents and adults. If you student will not be turning 11 until the fall, he/she will be granted a 2 week time period following their birthday to provide documentation to the nurse at Willink Middle School. Tdap is NOT the same as Dtap.
You and your child may receive all immunizations at (no cost for students):
Monroe County Health Department
111 Westfall Rd.
Rochestery, NY 14692
Immunization Walk-in Clinic: (phone: 753-5150) Wed afternoons 12:00-6:00PM; call to verify clinic hours. Students should have immunization records with him/her. Students enrolled in Child Health Plus, or Medicaid must bring their insurance cards.
Physical and Dental Exams
All students in K, 1st, 3rd, and 5th grades are required by NYS to have a current well child physical and dental exams on file in our office. If your child will be having a physical or dental appointment this summer, please send a copy into the health office at Schlegel. Physical and/or dental examination forms are available to print on the WCSD’s Health Office website.
End of the Year Medication Pick Up
If your child has any medication in the Health Office, don’t forget to pick it up at the end of the school year. Any Medication not picked up by June 25th will be discarded. Medication orders are only good for one school year; new medication orders will be needed for the ‘19-’20 school year.
Have a Safe, Healthy, and Relaxing Summer!

Infinite Campus & Student Portal Information
As a reminder, WCSD uses the Infinite Campus Parent & Student Portal Messenger system to send important emails, phone calls, and texts throughout the year, including school closings. Please note that your carrier’s message and data rates may apply if you choose the optional text option. Parents may update email information for their child(ren) through the portal by clicking on the Contact Preferences tab. The tab enables parents to decide the ways they receive important school and district messages and the types of messages they wish to receive. Any changes to existing Parent & Student Portal home address or phone numbers must be made by contacting your school’s administrative offices.
Individuals who need their IC activation code of who have questions should contact ICPortal@webstercsd.org.
