Message From Principal Webb
Dear Longhorn families,
In just a few weeks we will be opening our doors to welcome our children to the 2021-22 school year. I hope you enjoyed your summer and are looking forward to the new year as much as I am. This year promises to be full of achievement, productivity, and growth for our students. Together we will create a year of excellence for our scholars.
The Longfellow motto, Every Student Counts, Every Moment Matters, and our focus on our vision and mission will continue to prepare our diverse student body for future endeavors. We are welcoming back many staff and adding new teachers and staff members that will prove to be a great asset to the Longfellow family and tremendous support to our students.
Please read through the newsletter for more information on preparing for back to school 2021-22!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Webb

More details to come.
Meet our Student Family Advocate (SFA): Caitlin Hauskins
I am extremely pumped to be joining the Longfellow community working as the Student Family Advocate! For the past four years, I served Tate High School as the Student Advisory Center Coordinator. I have a passion for building relationships, making rad playlists, reading, yoga and spending time with my two kiddos and husband. We love to be outside and go on scooter rides down giant hills! I am so excited to help students and their families break down any barriers that make attending school more challenging.

School Registration Process and Class Lists
This is a reminder to complete the 2021-22 school year registration (previously E-Registration) if you have not done so already.
As most of you know the district is using a new system called Infinite Campus instead of PowerSchool. And you should have received an email from the district with the instructions for the registration.
If you have any questions, please call the school @ 319-688-1135. This registration must be completed in order for your student to be placed in a classroom for the 21/22 school year.
Classroom teachers will be reaching out to families/students in the next few weeks before school. In order for your child to be on a class list, we need them to be registered through Infinite Campus.
Kindergarten is flexible for the first 2 weeks of school. We take the first 2 weeks of school to get to know students and try to create the best learning environment/class lists after learning more about the students.
Before and After School Plans
Some students choose to walk to and from school, get dropped off/picked up by a parent in a car or some children are eligible for busing.
If your child eats breakfast at school they should arrive around 7:40.
Parking spaces are at a minimum and so I encourage all students who need to be dropped off to use the carline route. Carline is for students who (before and after school) will get dropped off by parents and picked up by parents (that are not parking and getting out of the vehicles).
If your child is getting picked up after school by carline, they will go to the gym and staff will call them by their name to exit the North doors. Please have your green(yellow) sheet in your car window so we know who to call out to carline in a timely manner.
Students who are getting picked up (by parents that park on the street and walk to pick up students) or students who are walking/riding bikes home will exit out of their team doors.
KEY (before and after school program) will enter and exit from the North door.
Only parents/students who need to visit the office will enter the main (west side) door.
Reminder- students should not arrive before 7:40 am.- there is no supervision before this time.
Breakfast is served from 7:40-7:55 and those students eating breakfast that are not in the before and after school program will enter through the North door (door 3)as well.
Check this out!
District Information
Dear Families and Staff,
The Iowa City Community School District is committed to the health and safety of our students and staff. The District is aware that the COVID-19 pandemic, especially the Delta Variant, remains present in the community. For the 2021-2022 school year, we have developed enhanced health and safety guidelines that will be implemented to help protect students, staff, families, and our entire school community. While we are not able to require the use of face coverings in our buildings as part of our guidelines, we strongly encourage both unvaccinated and vaccinated individuals to wear a mask while on District grounds. The use of face coverings plays a critical role in controlling the spread of COVID-19 within our community and protects those that are most vulnerable to the virus. The guidelines can be found on the District website using the link below.
Iowa City Community School District Health and Safety Guidelines for the 2021-22 School Year
The District’s health and safety protocols will be adjusted throughout the year based on the current COVID-19 transmission rate in Johnson County. The current guidance is based on a “Substantial” transmission rate, as the District anticipates this being the CDC indicated level for Johnson County on the first day of school.
We encourage you to review the guidelines to help prepare for the start of the school year. For families that feel the layered prevention strategies do not provide enough protection for their children, we recognize these concerns and the District is providing an alternative to in-person learning. The 100% virtual learning program offers a second option for student learning this fall. Individuals enrolling in the online program will have the opportunity to transition to in-person learning at the beginning of each trimester. An additional open enrollment period for the ICCSD Online program will take place from August 4 through August 9, 2021. To enroll, please contact the building secretary at your student’s assigned school. In addition, this enrollment period allows families currently signed up for the online program to switch to in-person learning if they so choose.
We are thankful for the patience, support, and trust of our school district community. We look forward to safely welcoming our students back on August 23rd. #ICCSDtogether
Sincerely,
Matt Degner
Superintendent
Iowa City Community School District
Help Return our Books!
Greetings,
We have MANY overdue books and books marked "lost" from last spring through fall 2020. This is making it difficult to get students the books that they want to read. Online students can return books in the return bin in the school entryway. Thank you for your help!
Longfellow Elementary stands with all people of color in the fight against racial injustice and inequality. We all deserve to be safe and secure. Longfellow Elementary, as part of the Iowa City Community School District, will not tolerate racism, hate, and other discriminatory acts. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. famously said that, “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” We will work hard to not let today’s injustice stop us from creating a better tomorrow for our school community. Please know that even though it is summer, you can reach out anytime.
Below you will also find links to resources that are available for our staff and our community. Stay safe and take care. #ICCSDtogether
