SKYRIDGE MIDDLE SCHOOL
First Week Recap
A Message from Principal Williams
Hello Skyhawk Families!
As we wrap up a great first week here at Skyridge, I wanted to take a moment to share a quick thank you to all of our families. I love working at Skyridge because we always have great kids and great family support. Thank you for sending us kids who are ready to learn and full of middle school energy. When we opened our doors on Tuesday, 800 Skyhawks brought that energy and enthusiasm and joined the energy that our staff has for working with middle school students. It’s a great combination and really helps students to settle into the groove. After only 4 days, we seem to be settled and off to a great start.
If you are new to being a middle school parent, you might not be aware of the fact that the answer to the question of “What did you do at school today” will begin to change. As a younger student, your child was often be very excited to fill you in on every detail about the day. As they move through adolescence, that excitement and willingness to share will diminish. This is perfectly normal. To help with this, we have many different avenues for you to get information about what is happening at the school. You can always check our website for information or follow us on Facebook or Instagram. You can also check out our morning news broadcast by subscribing to the SNN Youtube channel. Finally, make sure that your contact information is up to date in Skyward, especially your e-mail address, as we send out a number of items electronically. If you are not sure how to access Skyward, please contact us in the office and we can help you get it set up.
I also wanted to share with you one of our big goals for middle school students. Of course, we want them to be prepared academically for what comes after middle school and we will work hard to make sure that they are ready in the classroom. However, we also work to make sure that they are just as prepared as people for that next step. We view all of our interactions with your child as a learning opportunity. Any type of mistake is a chance to learn and grow and we will work with each student to provide that learning moment in all situations. Middle school is a great place for them to learn that behaviors could have consequences. You can help support this at home. Allow your students to experience some of those consequences and learn from their mistakes. I can assure you that we have the best interests of each student in mind, and want them to grow as an individual as well as a student.
Finally, I want to wrap up by letting you know that we had an influx of students over the summer. This is a great problem to have as a community and a school district. It also results in some growing pains. Your child might have told you that we have some big classes, and this is true. Today was the official count day, so it gives us a better idea of who is actually here and who might have moved without telling us. This means that we could be making some schedule changes over the next couple of weeks to help balance class loads. We will do our best to make this as smooth as possible for our students and we will be sure to communicate these changes to you if your student is affected.
I think that wraps it up for the first newsletter of the year. Thank you again for letting us work with your most valuable possession. If you have questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
