If you are applying Early Action or Early Decision with a deadline of October 15th, November 1st or November 15th, please be sure to see your counselor ASAP to review your application and submission of materials!
APPLICATION ESSAY
TIPS TO MAKE YOUR ESSAY STAND OUT AMONG THE CROWD!
Your college essay is the purest part of your application! Here are some tips to set yours apart:
- Be sure to tell a story that grabs the readers attention and engages them!
- Be truthful and represent yourself in the best way possible; be passionate and personal.
- Tell the reader something they can't gain from reviewing your application.
- Use simple language and tone; correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation are a must.
- Write a rough draft ... revise it ... edit it ... proofread it ... polish it ... then submit it!
THE FAFSA IS NOW AVAILABLE!
Now that October is upon us, families may begin working on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Below are a few tips to keep in mind (source: Nazareth College):
On or before October 1st, set up the federal student aid (FSA) ID for both the student and parent online.
Wait about a week after October 1 before diving into the FAFSA. It becomes available on October 1, but each year brings a new set of circumstances. It can take a few days for FAFSA administrators to fix bugs and problems that don’t become evident until after it’s in use.
Gather the paperwork beforehand:
- The FAFSA Code for the colleges you are applying to
- The TAP code for colleges in New York State you are applying to
- For entering college in 2023: Household or parent’s 2021 tax return and W2s. ("Parent" is the custodial parent for the previous 12 months)
- The student's 2021 tax returns and W2s
- Social security numbers
- Student’s driver’s license
- Bank statements, records of investments, records of untaxed income (e.g. child support, veteran’s non education benefits).
Set aside an hour of quiet time to work on this.
Go to FAFSA.gov (it's free!); avoid FAFSA.com (FAFSA.com charges a fee).
BONUS TIME SAVER! The IRS data retrieval tool will link IRS records with the FAFSA form and automatically pre-fill parts of the FAFSA automatically, saving time and work. In order for it to work, however, the street address entered in the FAFSA must be a perfect match to how it was entered in the completed tax return.
Residents of New York State, should complete the TAP right after submitting the FAFSA by selecting the "complete your state application now" box. Doing it now, while in the mode, will save the hassle of having to log back in and do it later.
To avoid data common processing errors and delays:
- Don't leave spaces blank; fill in every answer, even if the answer is "0".
- Use the child's full name every time (e.g. "Samantha"), not nicknames (e.g. "Sam").
- Double check that social security numbers have been entered correctly.
- Save copies and make a note of the date forms or other correspondence is submitted. Always keep copies of tax return transcripts and W2's, too.

TO TEST OR NOT TO TEST?
Many colleges and universities are still implementing Test Optional policies which allow students to apply to schools without being required to have a SAT and/or ACT score. Although there are schools who have been test optional in the past, we are seeing more and more added in response to cancelled exams and closed testing sites as a result of the COVID 19 Pandemic.
Although your school may be test optional, please reach out to the admission offices directly as specific majors still may require a SAT and/or ACT score. Also ask if you are able to qualify for Merit (academic) scholarships without a score.
SCHOLARSHIPS
- Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation: eligible applicants must have a 3.0 or higher GPA and complete an online application (that requires no essay, no recommendations, and no transcripts). More details can be found here. Deadline: October 31, 2022 (by 5 pm)
- Hagan Scholarship: a nationwide, four-year, need-based merit scholarship providing each recipient with the opportunity to graduate college debt-free, providing up to $6,000 each semester. After graduation from college, Hagan Scholars can apply for a two-year extension of their scholarship to attend graduate school or a professional school, receiving $6,000 each semester. What is HOBY?
HOBY’s (Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership) mission is to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation.

Location is To Be Determined
May/June 2023 (Specific dates to be determined)
Why attend?
HOBY allows students to recognize their leadership talents and apply them in becoming effective, ethical leaders in their home, school, workplace and community. Students attend seminars and participate in hands on leadership activities, meet leaders in their state and explore their own personal leadership skills while learning how to make a positive impact in their community.
How do I apply for consideration?
Students must submit a typed, 200-300 word essay on the following topic:
Please describe both the most rewarding and the most challenging aspect of being a leader in your school and/or community.
Students interested in applying also need to submit a typed resume highlighting their involvement in community service.
Once these items have been received by your school counselor, an interview may take place as the final component of the application process.
