Access Control at SMS

Have you noticed some new hardware on our exterior doors? SMS is the first SCSD2 school building to add a new access control safety feature. This safety feature modernizes staff access to the building by keeping doors locked until activated by a staff key fob or a staff key card. The office front door will be accessible during school hours for patrons and all students can still exit and enter the building each morning via the front or bus doors. We are very excited about this safety feature and we are looking to be fully operational in about a week's time.

Dodgeball, Part 2

It's B-A-A-A-C-K!

SMS is hosting another athletic fundraising all-school dodgeball tournament! The tourney will be held Tuesday, March 20th from 3:15-6:00 PM. Teams can be any combination of SMS students but this spring we have a change. Teams may have up to one member that is an adult employed by SCSD2. This can be any staffer from any school or department. Want to play with your favorite elementary teacher? Ask that person to play with you!

The team entry fee is $30 per team. Event admission is $3 per person (student or adult) for those wanting to join in on the fun by watching. Light refreshments will be available. Entry forms and team entry money are due by Monday, March 19th. Winners will receive championship t-shirts!

Entry forms will be available starting Monday, March 5th in the office after lunch. Get your team ready! Do you have six SMS students or do you want to play with five students and one adult? Decisions, decisions, decisions!

Welcome to SMS, Mrs. Beswick!

Hi! I’m Mrs. Beswick, the new SMS Nurse. I have lived in Scott County for almost 20 yrs. I am a Registered Nurse, I went to nursing school at Ivy Tech in Sellersburg where I earned my ASN. My future plans are to continue my education through Purdue University online to obtain my BSN. I started my nursing career 10 years ago in an acute care hospital, where I learned the valuable skills that I will be using to help make my favorite middle school a healthy safe place to learn. I have 3 sons that spent their middle school careers at SMS and developed the skills they needed to be successful in high school and beyond. SMS is a great school and I am could not be happier to be a part of the team.

To Report or Not to Report?

Remember that we are all responsible for safety and well-being of people at SMS!

Being responsible means that we

1) ACT with kindness,

2) STAND UP for others that are being mistreated, and

3) REPORT when any person or our school, in general, is in danger.

It is not uncommon for kids and adults to worry about reporting.

If I report, will I get in trouble? Will reporting cause me problems?

When should I report and when should I not report?

The best answer for kids and adults is this:

If someone is in harm's way, report. If their actions are or could be hurtful to themselves, to others, or to our school or community, report. Bullying, self-harm, violence, and substance abuse are all things that should be reported.

There are several ways to report.

Come to the office. Message a teacher, counselor, or administrator on Canvas.

Ask your parent/guardian to call school. Or call the anonymous Cyberbully hotline and leave enough detail to allow us to help! The Cyberbully hotline number is on the poster below and is also on our school web site!

Big picture

Builders' Club Seeking Comfort Care Donations

The SMS Builders' Club is seeking donations for the Riley Children's Hospital Comfort Cart program. The Comfort Cart is a place for parents of Riley Children's patients to get needed items during their children's hospital stays. If you have any unused travel-sized shampoo or conditioner, individually wrapped adult toothbrushes, toothpaste, kleenex, Chapstick, puzzle books, or full-sized candy bars, bring the item(s) to school and drop them off in the office or in Ms. Sutton's room. Let's help others that need comfort! #smscares

Got Talent?

Come one, come all and let your talents be known! The SMS Talent & Art Show is right around the corner. We are seeking talented individuals from all grade levels in different areas of expertise. In the past we have had people play musical instruments, dance, do magic tricks, sing, do stand up comedy, and display art! If any of these, or others that haven’t been mentioned, are your passion, get your act together and audition to be part of the 2018 SMS Talent and Art Show. Talent auditions will be held the week after Spring Break on Tuesday, April 3 and Wednesday, April 4 right after school until 4:15 in room 703. Come prepared with a preview of your act. You only need to audition one night, so choose the date that works best for you. By auditioning, you agree to be at the performance on Friday, April 27 and at the mandatory dress rehearsal on Thursday, April 26. Please contact Mrs. Zeigenbein, Mrs. Boley or Ms. Kruth if you have any questions.

Everyone is also welcome to participate in the Art Show that same night! Student artwork will be on display in the cafeteria during the Talent Show, and artists will set up their own displays. Artwork can be 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional, or digital, and students can enter multiple pieces of artwork. A handout with more info will be available in the SMS office next week. Contact Mrs. Owen if you have any questions about the Art Show!

We can’t wait to showcase your talents on April 27th!
