Have a Relaxing Spring Break
Friday, 3/27/2020
Dear RHS Families,
Thank you to all of you for being here for our community and being understanding as we all adjust to this new normal. I am humbled by the generosity of support and caring actions. A huge, air hug to you all.
RHS Supplemental Learning During School Closure
We hope all of you are healthy and staying engaged in the learning activities with your children during this unique time in history. While RHS classes inside the school buildings and traditional classrooms have been canceled until at least May 1st, our staff has been working hard to provide your students with supplemental learning. Our teachers have amazingly stepped up to this challenge and have begun delivering high-quality educational opportunities to all of our students.
Please note, OUSD shared a document with the greater community called, The Oakland Unified School District, Home Learning Resources 2020. It states, "Your child’s school has provided resources for home learning ... offered...to ensure that students continue their learning during this time of temporary school closures. Home learning assignments cannot be used to determine course grades or course completion. Families, please follow site plans first...” Click on the link above to read this document.
Beginning April 7, when we return from Spring Break, we will introduce a more streamlined, non-traditional instruction. RHS Supplemental Learning will continue to be a combination of grade-level educational tasks/activities and hands-on projects to keep students engaged outside of their classrooms. We will introduce Freckle an online learning platform through Clever that teachers will use to provide some additional learning activities and assignments. Your child now has access to FRECKLE and some families have begun using it. Feel free to explore on Clever.
General Daily Academic Schedule:
As many of you all know this has been a HUGE shift for all of us and the teachers. They realized that they needed to create a daily structure that would allow them time to plan and learn new platforms. In addition to providing a few new learning tools, teachers collaborated on the general daily plan below that they will adapt to their online learning “classrooms”:
Time Range: 8:40-10:00
Activity: Morning Meeting: Greeting/SEL check-in, an overview of the day, Q&A
1 Day per week - Whole-Class Meeting / 4 Days per week - Small Groups
Time Range: 9:00-11:45
Activity: Student work time, office hours, small groups.
Time Range: 12:30-3:00
Activity: Teacher Prep: Committees, Staff meetings/PD, grade level collaboration and planning
Redwood Heights Website Update:
In addition to the new learning resources, I updated the Redwood Heights Website to include a tab currently called, SCHOOL CLOSURE INFO to house all of the resources and additional learning links. I have asked Rebecca Weissman to curate and manage this section. This is a work in progress so please be patient with us as we continue to create this section.
Embracing Our Humanity @ RHS:
I appreciate the resilience of all of our community members - teachers, staff, families, and kids. I also know that this has been a stressful time for many of you. While I have sent out mental health, resources for our families, I want you to know that our HUGS Coordinator, Jennifer Wilson is here for you. She can be reached at jenniferrhshugs@gmail.com. She will also be a contributor to the new SCHOOL CLOSURE INFO section.
Let’s continue to be a living example of our school’s 19/20 theme, Embracing Our Humanity, by continuing to take care of each other with love, compassion, and positive human connections.

3. What expectations of “normal” am I letting go of today?
4. How am I getting outside today?
5. How am I moving my body today?
6. What beauty am I creating, cultivating, or inviting in today?
Wishing you all a restful Spring Break. Be safe. Be healthy!
