Newsela Elementary
Newsela is an innovative way to build reading comprehension with nonfiction that's always relevant. Every Article is offered at 5 different reading levels, making it easy for an entire class to read the same content. Teacher and student logins are required.
1. Create Your Teacher Account
Go to newsela.com and click on I'm an Educator. Use the Sign up with Google feature and click on "allow" when prompted.
2. Create Your Class and find your code
Hover over your name in the menu bar at the top and choose classes. Name your class and click create. Newsela will generate a quick start guide that you can print and give to your students. Your class code will be included in this guide.
3. Have Students join your class and create their accounts
When students go to the Newsela site, they will click on I'm a Learner. Have them enter your class code and then click on the Sign up with Google feature. Their Google Credentials are as follows:
- Username: username@stu.neisd.net
- Password: ne------- (student ID number)
4. assign articles to students
*Note - Not all features are available with the free Newsela account, such as viewing all students' results. You could use Newsela articles combined with Google Classroom as an alternative. Writing assignments can be turned in using a Google Doc and a screenshot of the quiz results could be uploaded. Contact your campus ITS for more information.
