Lakeville Area Public Schools presents a one day workshop on how to use Socratic Seminars with your students. This workshop gives participants hands-on practice and skills to take back to the classroom. Socratic Seminars help students develop future-ready skills and a deep understanding of complex ideas. Learn to facilitate high-level student discussion through rigorous and thoughtful dialogue.

The Power of a Socratic Seminar in the Classroom!

Participants will:

  • Prepare and lead a Socratic Seminar with colleagues

  • Participate in and reflect upon a variety of Socratic Seminars

  • Create opening questions that spark student conversation and thoughtfulness

  • Learn the knowledge and skill of selecting engaging complex texts to address any content area

  • Receive engaging seminar texts to take back to the classroom

Students learn to:

  • Solve problems

  • Think conceptually

  • Work collaboratively

  • Listen and articulate coherently

Workshop Details

Thursday, Sep. 27th 2018 at 8am-4pm

Crystal Lake Education Center, 16250 Ipava Avenue, Lakeville, MN

Participants need to plan on a full day of participation. Some preparatory reading of student-based text will be required. Seating is limited. There will be a waiting list once we reach 30 participants. Registration and sub costs will be covered by Teaching & Learning.

7:45-8:00 AM - Check in

8:00-9:15 AM - Introduction to Socratic Seminars and Dialogue

9:15-10:30 AM - Main Seminar Participation

10:30-11:30 AM - Main Seminar Critique/Reflection

11:30-12:30 AM - Lunch- On your own 12:30-1:30 PM Socratic Questioning Practice/Text Selection

1:30-2:00 PM - Opening Questions/Micro-Seminar Preparation

2:00-3:45 PM - Micro-Seminars Leadership and Participation

3:45-4:00 PM - Reflection/Debrief 4:00 PM Adjourn
