Corbett Grade School

February 2022

Corbett Grade School Principal, Michelle Dawkins

Dear Families,

After winter break in December, January always seems like a long month and this one was no exception! The good news is that with the support from our outstanding staff and families, we were able to overcome the challenges of the Omicron variant and the mighty East wind.

We thank everyone for helping with the early dismissal last week due to the power outage. All of our students made it home successfully, and we appreciate our families' flexibility. We are also fortunate to have staff that are able to step in and step up during an unusual end to our day.

Our staff continues to see a lot of our students making progress in many areas. Families can help their students by promoting reading at home, working on math facts, and encouraging them to be kind to their classmates.

Respectfully,

Michelle Dawkins

Corbett Grade School Principal

UPDATED SCHOOL HEALTH GUIDANCE

When your child is experiencing illness or has been in close contact with someone who has COVID-19:

Please have your student remain home if your student is experiencing illness or has tested positive for COVID-19.

Please have your student remain home if your student has been in close contact with someone who is positive or presumed positive with COVID-19 and if your student is not fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Students that are fully vaccinated and have been in close contact with someone with COVID-19 may come to school as long as they are not experiencing any symptoms of illness.

Please keep your student home until your student's fever has been gone for 24 hours without medication. Students are also required to stay home until they have had 48 hours without vomiting or diarrhea.

Below is our Communicable Disease Response: Flowchart. We use this guide and rely on Multnomah County Health Department to make the final recommendation.

Please contact our office if you have any concerns or questions. By working together, we are able to continue safely educating our students in-person.

You will be notified by email and/or a text message. Announcements of closures or delays can also be found on our district website and local news media.

SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS

Please contact your classroom teacher if you would like to volunteer in your student's classroom. All volunteers will need to follow Corbett School District COVID-19 protocols, including wearing a face covering indoors and practicing physical distance when possible.

All volunteers will need to complete a background check, a confidentially statement, a COVID-19 release form, and be fully vaccinated to be eligible to volunteer at school.

Here is the link to the required forms: https://corbett.k12.or.us/about/volunteers-contractors-forms/

WEATHER and RECESS

We will continue to have students outside for recess when possible, but we have our gym and shed areas when the weather is too cold to safely and comfortably be outside. We are asking that students come prepared to be outside each day by bringing a coat and hat to wear. Gloves are also helpful on those chilly days. Please label coats with your student's name.

RETURN TO STATE ASSESSMENTS

For the past two years, the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) has not required schools to administer annual state assessments. This year, ODE is requiring a return to assessment for our students.

  • Students in grades 3-8 and 11 will take the English/Language Arts and Math assessments
  • Students in grades 5, 8 and 11 also take a Science assessment
  • Parents can opt their child out to the ELA and Math tests and can request that their child be exempt from the Science assessment. We will email those forms in the beginning of February.

Students in grade 3-5 will take assessments after spring break. More information will be coming from your student's classroom teacher.
