Lit Coach News
Everything Reading and Writing
In This Issue
In December's "Lit Coach News", we look closely at how our Reading UOS fit into a Balanced Literacy Program. Also, our "Colleagues as Resources" section introduces us to Liz Gross, new to the district. She is really rocking the Units of Study! Read below to learn about her process for tackling a new Unit of Study.
What Are the Components of Balanced Literacy?
How Do the Reading Units of Study Align with Balanced Literacy Components?
Modeled Reading-This is achieved when we teach mini lessons and demonstrate/model/and think out loud about a particular strategy.
Independent Reading-This is achieved during the independent component of Reading Workshop. Students have a chance to practice strategies with support and guidance from you in the form of conferences.
Both Shared and Guided Reading components of Balanced Literacy are not developed in the Units of Study. While they are mentioned in a "section" of each session, they are not detailed in any manner because they are meant to be responsive in nature and therefore are usually planned for by the teacher.
So how do we fit it all in? How can we make it so our students are getting a balanced approach?
I look forward to discussing this in more detail during our upcoming Quarterlies.
Colleagues As Resources
I am often asked how best to tackle and learn a new UOS. Liz's process is valuable for us to look closely at and possibly try ourselves. Each weekend, Liz reads the lessons for the upcoming week. This step is so important. Knowing where you are heading helps you to know why a mini lesson or mini lessons are being taught. She prepares her anchor charts ahead of time and before the unit even starts, she imps anything that she may need. The night before, Liz rereads the next day's lesson to be sure she has a good grasp of what she's teaching and how.
Go see Liz if you'd like more information on her UOS process. She really knows the lessons well which in turn makes her more comfortable and ready to teach!
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, LIZ!
