Foundations for Life Long Learning 19 March
Dear Parents and Staff
The situation with regard to the COVID-19 virus is obviously at the forefront of everyone’s thoughts. The uncertainty of what the future holds has caused much angst and worry for many in our community. We have seen the evidence of this in our supermarkets with the shelves stripped bare of most items as people panic in the hope of being prepared for what may lie ahead. This uncertainty can lead us to a state of despair, and we need to keep in mind that our leaders both nationally and at our state level are being advised by a wide range of experts on ways to keep us safe and mitigate the spread of the virus. We are told, and the statistics suggest, that we in Australia are in a strong position at this stage in dealing with the virus. At the school level we are constantly reminding the children about maintaining a high level of hygiene and have taken the following steps in an effort to provide a safe and supportive environment for all.
- The soap dispensers in all of the toilets are checked before recess, before lunch and after school each day to ensure there is adequate available for the children and staff to use.
- The drink fountains have been de-commissioned to avoid cross contamination. Children may fill their water bottles at the fill point outside the school office or in the wet area in their classroom.
- Checks are conducted for all contractors, volunteers and visitors to our school.
- The staff have been working on plans to deliver lessons to children remotely should we be advised of a school closure.
- We are currently working on a matrix to follow in the event of school closure.
- We have developed a plan to follow should there be a confirmed COVID-19 case in our community.
- The swimming lessons for PP to Year 5 have been cancelled. (A full credit for the swimming lessons will be applied to all school accounts).
- The Dads’ and Kids’ Campout has been cancelled.
- The Parents/Child workshop and the celebration of the Sacrament of Penance have both been cancelled.
- The Interschool Swimming Carnival scheduled for Monday 30 April has been cancelled.
- Catholic Education WA continues to liaise with the Education Department and The Association of Independent Schools and is providing our school with daily updates.
Please be assured that we will continue to implement supports and changes as the need arises based upon the advice that we receive from Catholic Education WA. The safety of everyone in our community is our first priority and we will do all in our power to maintain this. With this in mind parents are requested to:
- If you or a close family member has returned from overseas recently, you or they must self-isolate for 14 days and parents are to advise the school of the situation immediately.
- If you or a close contact have been tested for COVID-19 you or they must self-isolate until after a negative result has been confirmed. It is imperative that you advise the school immediately of both the testing and the result.
- Should you or a close contact be diagnosed with the COVID-19 virus you must advise the school immediately so that we may implement appropriate procedures.
- Please remember to maintain a sense of perspective. Whilst we are all worried about the possibilities of contracting the virus, we need to trust that we are all following the guidelines regarding self-isolation, testing and reporting. We have already had instances of family members being trolled online with accusations that were totally untrue. Nobody should be exposed to this type of vilification, most particularly in what is supposed to be a Christian community.
SCHOOL NON-ATTENDANCE
As stated above, the staff have been working on the delivery of offsite lessons should there be a school closure. These will be implemented only if there is a full school closure as it is not possible to cater for the needs of a few families that have made the choice to keep their children home and to maintain the regular class lessons for those attending school. The following advice was sent to me by the Executive Director of Catholic Education WA, Dr Debra Sayce, yesterday.
Attendance at school (new information as at 18 March 2020)
Should parents choose to keep their child at home without seeking medical advice, it is not a requirement that schools provide curriculum work and activities. We understand that there may be extenuating circumstances where consideration be given to provide support and resources where possible. The priority for staff is to maintain focus on classroom learning programs. In the event of a temporary school closure, schools are asked to enact their curriculum continuity plan.
Whilst there is not a requirement for us to provide work, we will send the parents of those choosing to not attend some generic work that may not be directly related to the areas of the curriculum that are being covered at school at the time.
Please keep safe and take care.

PARISH NEWS
60th Anniversary of the Parish
On Friday 20 March 2020, Cloverdale Parish celebrates its 60th Anniversary. It was on this day in 1960, that the Archdiocese of Perth established the new Parish.
The decision to form a new Parish was a result of rapid post war development in the Belmont district. The increase in population in the local area highlighted the inadequacy of the existing Mass Centres to cater for the growth in Catholic families attending Mass.
Families living in the Cloverdale area previously attended Mass at St Therese’s Catholic Church in Kewdale. During this time, Cloverdale was part of the Belmont, Carlisle and Redcliffe Parishes.
Project Compassion
Parishioners are encouraged to support Project Compassion 2020 by taking a box or set of envelopes home and contributing over Lent. Donations of $2.00 and over are tax deductible. You can donate via credit card or by EFT.

CLASS NEWS
What a fun start we have had to Year One!
In Religion we have been learning about Lent and made promises of something kind we can do for others during this time. We have been learning how Jesus showed love to others and how we can also do this. On Shrove Tuesday we all enjoyed making and eating our delicious pancakes. The following day, Ash Wednesday, Brother Stephen came to class and put ashes on our forehead and spoke to us about their importance.
We had some of our Grandparents come into class to share items from the past. It was interesting seeing old telephones, clothes, radios, photographs, irons and even football jumpers! We started our first floorbook of the year by asking lots of different questions about the past and over the term we will answer these. Last week we went on an excursion to Peninsula Farm, Maylands and learnt all about the Hardey family and especially enjoyed playing games from the past such as hopscotch, quoits, skipping and horseshoe toss.
During writing we have been learning how to create recounts and are getting very clever at including when, who, where, what and our feelings. If you stop by our classroom one afternoon you might even see our excursion recounts on display.
In Maths we are exploring number facts to ten. These can help us solve lots of different addition problems. We are trying hard to learn which months are in each season and how our weather changes.
We have become observant artist and noticed line all around us. We have thought about different emotions and draw angry lines, happy lines, sad lines and silly lines.
We have also been technology whizzes this term and we are learning lots of different apps to help us learn including PicCollage, Book Creator, Popplet and ExplainEverything. We enjoy getting onto Mathseeds and Reading Eggs and can now log in all by ourselves.

HARMONY DAY
To celebrate Harmony Day on Saturday, 21st March the Year 2P class based their assembly on the concept of Harmony and loving one another as Jesus taught us. This week the children participated in classroom activities that explored the concept of harmony within our world. We also mapped our various cultural backgrounds, by placing our photos onto the world map outside the library. The children enjoyed placing their photos and learning where we all come from. We thank Mrs Flexman for creating this map for us.

Senior Swimming Carnival (4-6) - Bayswater Waves
Last Thursday, students from years 4-6 participated in the annual Senior Swimming Carnival held at Bayswater Waves. We were blessed with delightful weather for the day and students eager to showcase their talents. The day started off with the 50m events and some fantastic races, in particular the year 6 races, with some calls within arm’s reach between places 1-3. A huge congratulations to the Faction Captains on their first carnival and providing a fantastic atmosphere for their respective factions! Many thanks also go out to the parent helpers and staff who worked tirelessly to ensure the smooth running of the carnival. Below are the Champion Boy and Girl results for each year group:
