Raz Kids- Read with your child at home!

We have just started reading "just right books" in kindergarten. That means, students are starting to read books that are at their reading level. Today, I am sending home Raz Kids login information. You can download Raz Kids onto your phone or ipad, or login at https://www.raz-kids.com/. We have been doing a little bit of Raz Kids in the classroom, so the students should understand how to maneuver through the app/site. As the child's reading level goes up, I will move their level up in Raz Kids. This is a super way to read with your child and get them excited about reading!

Winter Weather Reminder

Thank you for sending the kiddos into school with warm jackets, gloves, hats and scarves. It's getting chilly out there and they need it during outdoor recess. Just a reminder to practice having them zip themselves up when they put their jacket on. Right around this age is when they should be able to do it independently!

Math

This week, we practiced...

Number writing (I was on a mission to see no more reversals and no starting from the bottom!)

Sorting attribute blocks

Determining shapes by feel

Using a calculator (this was particularly fun!)

Ten Frame Quick Looks

Writer's Workshop

This week, we started working on Author/Book Reviews. We have been reading a bunch of Eric Carle, Mo Willems, Jan Brett and Laura Numeroff Books. Each child has picked a book and is writing a review about why they like it!

Reader's Workshop

This week we started reading just right books independently and in guided reading groups! In these groups, I am working with students on reading strategies like touching the words, looking at the pictures, looking at the first and last letter, skating through the word, and comprehension. Children have a "book bag" in their book bins with 2-3 just right books. We are working on reading these books for 6 whole minutes, then transitioning to reading look books for 6 minutes!

Box Tops

Just a friendly reminder that we are always collecting box tops! Send them in to the class and then the class with the most box tops wins a pizza party at the end of the year!
