PBIS Field Trip - - Viaje de campo PBIS
On Tuesday, December 11, 15 students visited the Shedd Aquarium for a PBIS reward field trip. Students saved their Patriot Awards and redeemed them for a ticket to the Shedd. While on the trip, students had animal encounters with a porcupine and skunk, saw thousands of species of fish, and even touched some fish and starfish! Students were also able to experience an aquatic show! Watching and learning about the dolphins, seals, sea otters, and penguins during the show was a definite highlight of the trip! There will be two more PVIS field trips this year- so be sure to “Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Academically Engaged” throughly the school day to earn Patriot Awards to be eligible for the next trip!

This quarter, the students have been learning about Mesopotamia and its geography. In particular, we focused on how Mesopotamia influenced the first modern civilization through the use of rivers, their law system, writing system, and new technology. The students were asked to write a paragraph comparing Mesopotamia civilization and how it impacted the modern civilization. Now we are beginning to look at the civilization of Egypt. So far, we have been looking at primary sources on how the Nile River was a “gift” to the Egyptians. Next we will be us looking at the economy of Egypt and how we see parts of Egypt’s economy today in the 21st century.
The 7th graders are about to take the Federal Constitution test! All 7th graders have been learning about the structure of our government and the responsibilities of each branch. Ask any of them and they should be able to tell you that the Legislative Branch makes the laws, the Executive Branch enforces the laws, and the Judicial Branch interprets the laws. The students should also be well versed on the Bill of Rights - they had the opportunity to play the game “Do I Have a Right?” on their iPad and act as lawyers who defend the rights of their clients that are protected by the Constitution. Good luck to all 7th graders when they take the test next week!
This has been a HUGE quarter for 8th grade Social Studies. This quarter students have been learning about World War 1 and the causes that lead to the "war to end all wars". Your child should be very well versed in the acronym M.A.I.N. and I encourage you to ask them what each part of the acronym means and how it is relevant to today. Students were also required to understand the Treaty of Versailles and the economical and geographical impacts of the treaty. Students after learning about the economical effects of this treaty understood why we saw the rise of Adolph Hitler and World War II. For their assessment students were required to write an argumentative essay answering our essential question “How does every action have an equal and opposite reaction”. They were to answer this not from a Science perspective but from what they have learned from World War I.
