A Thematic Look At 1984

Power's On-Going Theme

Power was all that The Party was and all that it ever cared about. The Party did not care to help it's people or make the world a better place for their people, all they cared about was the ability to control the people. Whether their control was through propaganda, the telescreens, or the Five Minutes Hate all of these were used to keep power over the people and keep them from being able to express individuality. "In its second minute the Hate rose to a frenzy. People were leaping up and down in their place...The dark haired girl behind Winston had begun crying out 'Swine! Swine!Swine!' and suddenly she picked up a heavy Newspeak dictionary and flung it at the screen." Because of the Five Minutes Hate the people can be manipulated to act on what they were taught by the people of The Party, that they must hate who The Party hates no matter how little of information is brought to them.

All loyalty must be paid to The Party and only The Party, there must not be any loyalty among family or friends for this would be seen as a crime against The Party. This was accomplished by the brainwashing of the masses, especially the children who have turned into The Party's little spies and could easily get their parents thrown in the Ministry of Love and be terminated. "Nearly all children nowadays were horrible. What was worst of all was that by means of such organizations as the Spies they were systematically turned into ungovernable little savages, and yet this produced in them no tendency whatever to rebel against the discipline of The Party. On the contrary, they adored The Party and everything connected with it." The Party seeks all matter of control over its people, even if that means turning child against the parents. As long as the will of Big Brother is around the children will continue to follow the strict rules that they were reinforced with.

O'Brien has stated what The Party wants " The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely on power. Not wealth or luxury or long life or happiness: only power, pure power." The party has no interest in the people other than to control them and make them see that The Party is in it for its own well-being and ego. "Do you begin to see, then, what kind of world we are creating? It is the exact opposite of the stupid hedonistic Utopias that the old reformers imagined. A world of fear and treachery is torment, a world of trampling and being trampled upon, a world which will grow not less but more merciless as it refines itself...Already we are breaking down the habits of thought, which have survived from before the Revolution...There will be no loyalty, except the loyalty towards The Party. There will be no love, except the love for Big Brother." The Party wants complete and total control over the masses, so they see to eradicate any and all emotions of people toward one another, so that they will only listen and love The Party and all they stand for. No one will ever be free or alone or happy if it is not for The Party and Big Brother.
