Messages from Jean Vanier
When we love each other we are content with very little. When we have light and joy in our hearts, we don’t need material wealth.

Leadership Message
Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 19:14
One of the greatest blessing of choosing Catholic education for your children is the daily opportunities they have to encounter Jesus. As the first and most important teachers, parents in our Elk Island Catholic schools have chosen Catholic education for their children and we recognize this important responsibility. One of the many ways at Jean Vanier we invite our students to journey with Jesus is through our, " Mass with the Principals". Every grade level has an opportunity at least twice a year to attend daily mass at OLPH with Mr. Marshall and Mrs. Boehm. Having this more intimate experience at mass seems to really benefit our students as they engage with the liturgy and share in the ministries.
Today, our grade fours attended mass with Father Lazar, a visiting priest, at OLPH. Father Lazar reminded our students that they are a child of God; loved, celebrated, and a special part of God's family. Many thanks to our parents who were able to attend mass with us and to our students who took part in the liturgy.
Father Lazar reminds our students that they are a child of God.
Proclaiming the word of God.
Prayers of the Faithful.
Bringing up the gifts.
Students sharing their gift of service.
Connecting with our OLPH parishioners.
Shrove Tuesday Pancake Lunch
As in past years, we ask that students bring a toonie ($2) on Monday or Tuesday to help cover a portion of the cost.
Any parent wishing to volunteer during this time, please email jvpac1009@gmail.com
(This is optional, if your child does not wish to participate, please send them with their lunch.)
Thank-you so much to our JV Parent School Council for organizing and providing pancakes for our students on Tuesday for lunch.
Ash Wednesday Mass
As mass begins at 9:15 am, attendance will be taken promptly at 8:41 am, and classes will begin to walk over to OLPH right after attendance. Please make sure that your child arrives to school on time.
Students should come to school dressed for the weather, with warm coats, hats, mitts, and boots.
We will need parent volunteers to assist with walking to and from mass. If you are able to help, please email jv@eics.ab.ca.
We look forward to preparing for the start of the lenten season together as a family.

Children are usually prepared for the sacrament of Eucharist (Communion) when they are in grade 2. The Grade 2 program is a catechesis on the Eucharist (Mass). At the parish level the immediate preparation for the reception of Communion is provided. It includes formation for parents and children. Children are prepared for the Sacrament of Reconciliation prior to reception of Communion. First Eucharist (First Communion) is usually celebrated when a child is 7 years of age or older.
School Masses at OLPH Parish
As part of our faith formation this year, and aligning with our Divisional priorities, we are very excited to have the opportunity to take our classes to daily mass once a month with our Principal and Assistant Principal.
Each month, Mr. Marshall and Mrs. Boehm will be taking one grade to morning mass at OLPH Parish. As we are so blessed to be in such close proximity to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, our students will be walking to mass. Please make sure that your children are dressed for the weather.
These are the dates for which your child’s class will attend mass throughout the year:
Grade 3 classes: March 15, 2017
Grade 2 classes: April 26, 2017
Grade 1 classes: May 10, 2017
Parents, grandparents, and family members are more than welcome to join us, either at the church, or at the school to walk to mass. Mass begins at 9:15 am, and we will depart Jean Vanier at 8:50 am. Students are expected back at school around 10:30 am.
