A Peek at Our Week In...
Mrs. Erlewine's class September 2nd, 2016
Reminder: No School Monday, September 5th (Labor Day)!
DOES YOUR CHILD LOVE BOOKS? SO DO WE!
Families,
My favorite thing about kindergarten is reading! Your children will learn to read this year! What better way to help them? Purchase some of their favorite books! Book orders came home yesterday in folders.
I ask one favor: if you only order one time this year, let it be now! If we can get $250 in student orders, we will earn 10,000 points. That will be enough points to buy free books for our classroom library for the entire year! I will send home book orders each month. But I hope you'll order this month to help us reach our goal. Let me know if you need help ordering online. Or if you need another book order, I can get you one!
To make paying easier....Book orders are due September 15th, but you can post date your check until October 1st!I will not send in the money until then!
I hope you'll consider making an order this month. Thanks for supporting our classroom reading program.
Weekly Homework Folders
Homework folders came home Friday September 2nd.
These will go home every Friday and should be returned the Following Friday (unless there is no school on Friday and I'll let you know when they are due that week). There are directions on the back of the folder.
The weekly homework is a sheet with days marked Monday-Thrusday. This is a nightly activity that will reinforce the skills we have already learned in class. It should take no longer than five minutes a night.
I have also placed two simple stories that have our sight words "I" and "am" for you to practice reading and keep at home.
Rainbow Words and Sight Word Wallets are also inside. The "red" list was in each child's folder. Sight words are great for students whom are learning letters quickly. This is a good challenge for those ready to read. Please cut these up and practice these words. Once your child has mastered these 17 words, place them on the "Ready to Read To Mrs. Erlewine" side and I will test them, put their name on the Rainbow Wall, and send home the next color! Work as slow or as fast as you please! The more words they know, the better readers they will be!
COMPUTER LAB PRACTICE
We visited the computer lab for the first time Wednesday. We were able to practice our mouse skills with a fun bee's and honey game and then visit the Starfall website. I will be sending home a computer template for your children to practice on each day. When we visit the computer lab and use the computers or iPads in our classroom the students will have to log in. This requires the student to type their ID number, press enter, and then type their ID number and press enter again to log in to our computer at school. Please have them practice this at home from time to time. It will make computer lab class more efficient if they can log in on their own. Thank your for supporting this learning at home!
Reading
This week we looked at the letters Ff, Gg, Hh, Ii, Jj, Kk, Ll, Mm, and Nn with our reading series. We read the book We are So Proud and learned a few facts about our flag. Ask your child these questions:
- Do you know what our flags nickname is?
- What do we call the flag when we sing about it?
- How many stars does our flag have?
- What do the stars represent?
- How many stripes does the flag have?
They also noticed the sight words: I and am in the story.
We learned to listen and look for the details such as setting of a story. A setting is when and where a story takes place.
The boys and girls are so smart! They impress me everyday!
Next week we will look at letters Oo-Ss and learn two new sight words: the, little. Our story is Platypus Lost! We will talk about the sequence of stories and how families cooperate.
Math
Here are the number poems we are learning:
- 0 The oval shape is a hero. That’s how we make a zero.
- 1 A line straight down and then you’re done. That’s the number one.
- 2 Around and back on the railroad track. That’s the number two. or (half a heart then slide right)
- 3 Around a tree. Around a tree. That’s the way to make a three.
- 4 Down and over and down some more. That’s a number four.
- 5 Straight line down. Then around. Hat on top and five’s a clown.
- 6 Stick and a hoop do the tricks. That’s the way to make a six.
- 7 Across the sky and down from heaven. That’s the way to make a seven.
- 8 Make an S and do not wait. Go back up and close the gate that’s an eight.
- 9 A loop and a line. That’s a nine.
- 10 Straight line down. Then around with a grin. That’s the way to make a ten.
