Happy New Year Edition

Important Dates:

Light Test: Wednesday

Reading Projects: due the week of January 25-29

DARE Graduation: February 3 @ 8:30 a.m.

It was wonderful to see all of the happy faces on Monday and catch up on the excitement of the holiday break! Monday might have been a bit of a slow start, but we picked up steam and finished our week strong! Purpose and Effort are the two buzzwords we are using to describing how the kids should be self-monitoring their attention towards their fifth grade work!

We wrapped up our science unit on light; the test will be Wednesday. Journals should be coming home for review on Monday if you have not seen them earlier this week. Please see the pictures below for a sneak peek at the six science stations the kids worked through this week. They explored reflection with lasers and mirrors, refraction with water, read about light, and used prisms! Our next science unit is on sound. We will continue to study investigate geography through morning work and our geography foldable.

This week, the kids helped fine tune the next reading project. They were given a rubric that we wrote and reviewed in class. I cannot wait to see this next batch of projects! The written part is meant to reflect reading discussions and assignments we have in class; the creative part is where your kiddo can let loose! We continue to work on punctuation in grammar, with a punctuation focus on commas and the rules for using commas correctly.

Gifted Resource Program News

How can students be referred for gifted screening and what makes a good candidate? A teacher or a parent may refer a child for gifted screening. If your child exhibits gifted behaviors and is performing at above grade level expectations, your child’s teacher may refer him or her as a good candidate for the screening process.

Parents may also refer students for gifted testing. Please discuss your child’s performance with his or her teachers, as they will have insight into gifted characteristics and above level benchmarks. If you would like to go forward with gifted testing, your child's teacher will send home a referral packet that includes a testing permission form.

The deadline to submit requests for spring 2016 gifted testing is February 1st. If you have any other questions, please contact cfranklin@hcps.us for more information.
