Swansboro High School
Weekly Updates December 8, 2019
Happy Sunday Pirate Families!
It was a fun week of exciting learning opportunities, field trips, performances and athletics at Swansboro High School! Congratulations to our theater arts students who offered two hilarious performances of "The One Act Disaster" this weekend. Congratulations also to our cheerleaders who competed in the NCHSAA competition. They did an outstanding job and received a bid for the national competition in March.
Our winter sporting season is off to a great start with all of our teams winning against Trask on Tuesday night in basketball! Our JV and varsity girls continued their winning streak against Richlands on Thursday and Dixon on Friday! Our varsity ladies are now 5-0! Justin and Zach Biggs have both broken school records in indoor track and are already headed to states in the 55m and 300m. In swim, both men and women took first place on Wednesday night and 2nd place on Saturday. 1st place finishers included Liam Kilan, Bryce Vanderwerf, Owen Mohr, Morgan Cassell, Makenna Nelson, Hanaka Miyazaki, Bailey Nelson and Ally Taylor! Our wrestlers continue to dominate on the mats with River Carroll continuing to take 1st place and remaining undefeated in his weight class.
This will be a busy week and student attendance will be very important because of benchmark assessments. We will also host the Pirate Winter Games/Special Olympics on Tuesday and our students will be recognized as part of the National Math and Science Initiative Grant on Wednesday. HOSA will also host a blood drive on Wednesday.
10th grade students will receive their pre-ACT score reports on Monday. Parents should review these reports with students on Monday and encourage students to take advantage of opportunities to boost scores prior to taking the ACT next year.
Athletics this week will include basketball at home on Tuesday night, wrestling and indoor track at home on Wednesday, basketball at Jones on Thursday and Dixon on Friday. Swim will travel to Winterview on Friday and our wrestlers will compete in the WRAL competition next weekend. We will host an Orchestra concert on Thursday and a guitar concert on Friday. Saturday will include our Rho Kappa students participating in the Wreaths Across America Ceremony at the Veterans cemetery.
Our next strategic planning and project graduation meetings are Monday, December 16, 2019. Community members should note that we will start selling Reverse Raffle tickets as soon as we return from winter break. Tickets are $150 for 2 and includes dinner, entertainment, drinks and your chance to win the 10k jackpot! All proceeds benefit project graduation.
In closing today we would like to send a special congratulations to Mrs. Golden and Mrs. Dick for achieving National Board Certification. We are very proud of their efforts and national recognition!
