Principal's Message - JANUARY 2021!
Happy New Year! Welcome back to the 2020-21 school year, albeit in an online learning environment for everyone. We look forward to welcoming EVERYONE back on January 11.
Teachers and EAs continue to support students; we’re proud of the job that staff are doing to support each other as well. All of us have our own unique gifts and talents… and it’s not just skills that are being supported. Mental health and emotional wellness are also under tremendous strain and Gish staff are looking out for each other with emotional wellness as well!
One of the best analogies that I heard about came from Miss Bischler in Kindergarten. She described “a dinner plate,” where everyone was carrying a load on their plate, but the plates were not made of the same material, nor did they have the same amount of food on them. Some were ceramic, while others were made of paper. We have many strategies to deal with the loads on our plates. Many of us are managing very well, but sometimes, things become overwhelming. That’s what our Winter Break was for…
Online Learning for Quarter 3:
Quarter 2 is progressing well. In order to have assessments completed and Progress Reports ready for the end of January, students have to work really hard and keep up with all assignments. We have only two-three weeks of intensive instruction, and teachers are going to need evidence of learning. We have to assess the assignments/projects, so please be diligent with following through with completing everything.
We want to assure you that Elmer Gish School is definitely a safe place, and we have taken many steps to reduce exposures to COVID-19. We encourage all parents to resume in-class learning for both Programs, especially COGITO, in Quarter 3. As important as in-person learning is in ALL programs, Cogito is different in Language Arts (graphemes, recitations, syllabic spelling, etc.) as well as Mathematics (accelerated Saxon text, strand-based instead of unit-based, etc.) There will not be a Cogito option for on-line learning.
