Message from the Principal

Dear Carlton Families,

Strong communication between parents and teachers is vital for students to succeed. Parent/Teacher conferences are starting next week. Please be sure to sign up for a conference time. This is a great opportunity to discuss your child's progress and discover how you can best support your child's learning at home. If you prefer to have a translator at the conference, please let your child's teacher know. If you have specific concerns or questions, it would be helpful to email your child's teacher in advance.

Students will be dismissed early during parent/teacher conferences. From November 7th to November 9th and November 14th to November 18th, 1st through 5th-grade students will be dismissed at 1:15 pm. Students in Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten will be dismissed at 1:05 pm. Students attending Extended Care will be picked up at these earlier dismissal times. If your child attends a different after-school care program, please let them know about the earlier dismissal times during parent/teacher conference days.

November 10th is a USD Professional Development Day. There is no school for students on that day. There is also no school on November 11th because it is Veteran's Day.

Please contact our office team if you have any questions.

Mary Katayama,

Principal

Come to the Coffee Social Before the Halloween Parade

Carlton HSC is hosting a Coffee Social on Monday, October 31st in the morning before the Halloween parades. Come to the front of the school, near the flag pole, after you drop off your child to get some coffee and meet other Carlton parents.

Child-Friendly Halloween Costumes

School parades should be child-friendly and enjoyable for everyone who attends the parades. Therefore, frightening or culturally insensitive costumes should not be worn in the parade. For example, an inflatable sumo costume may be disrespectful to people from Japan. Also, scary, bloody masks may cause fear and anxiety in our younger students. Therefore, these types of costumes or masks should not be brought to school. In addition, weapon-like props are not allowed at school. Students can wear costumes without the scary masks or they can make a fun, creative costume to wear at school at save their spooky costume for trick-or-treating.

If your child does not want to participate in the Halloween parade or activities, please contact your child's teacher. If your child's costume is uncomfortable or her/his shoes are slippery, please have your child wear clothing underneath to make it easy to change, and bring shoes that are safe to wear on the playground or grass. Thank you for helping all students have a positive experience at school on Halloween.

School Photo Make-Up Day is November 4th

On Friday, November 4th, we will have a school photo make-up day. If your child was absent on Picture Day or if you are planning to purchase your child's photo but you would like your child to retake the photo, please fill out this form. Filling out this form will help us know which students need to take a photo on November 4th. Your. child's photo will be emailed to you and then you can decide if you want to purchase the photo. Photos are sent directly to parents' homes. Every child should be photographed. if you have any questions, contact orders@gsp-photos.com

Project Cornerstone - November Book

Next month the ABC volunteers will be reading the book René Has Two Last Names by René Colato Laínez. The author tells the story of René, who moves from El Salvador to the United States. René has two last names which represent his mother and father’s families. His classmates make fun of him for having a long last name.

When we learn about other cultures it creates an understanding of others. When we explain our culture to others it promotes understanding of our differences. To learn more about this lesson and discuss this story with your child use the Rene has Two Names slides.
