Activity Boards for Absences
Choice boards are not meant to replace in-class learning, rather, they are designed to keep students engaged in learning activities if they are able to do so while absent.
Completion of choice board activities is optional and not required by District 63, which means that work should not be turned into school and students should not expect grades or feedback from teachers.
Parent Education Opportunity: The School-Home Connection...Tips and Tricks to Support Your Child's Learning in School and at Home
Ever wonder how teachers monitor your child’s growth and learning in school? What do teachers use to know how your child is progressing? What can you do at home to support that progress?
Join us, on Tuesday, October 25 from 5:60-6:30 pm at the Early Learning Center, for an interactive evening on the role of authentic assessment in the early childhood classroom, what the children are learning, and how teachers track and monitor children’s progress. Most importantly learn ways you and your child’s teaching team can work together to facilitate your child’s learning and development.
Childcare (for children 2 year olds and older) will be provided for the event. Coffee will be available for families.

Halloween Parades
Here you will find information regarding the Halloween Parade at the Early Learning Center on Monday, October 31st.
We will not have volunteers in the building on this day. Our students will participate in fall themed activities during the day and we will adhere to District 63's guidelines and procedures centered on school health and safety. Healthy snacks will be offered and information regarding these is listed in the letter. Please DO NOT send in any candy, treats, or food items for students in your child's classroom. Any food items will be sent back home.
REPORTING ABSENCES
If your child has to miss school due to illness or any other reason, please submit via the Parent Portal.
How to use the Parent Portal to report your child’s absence:
- All absences must be submitted on the morning of the day your child will miss school - NOT the night before. Once you log into the Portal, you’ll choose your child’s name and navigate to a list of online forms. Select and complete the “Absence Form,” and then submit.
- Review detailed, step-by-step instructions.
- You can find these instructions at any time on our website: www.emsd63.org/attendance.
- Questions? Contact the Early Learning Center main office at 847-827-4165
Notes from the Nurse
The Drug Enforcement Administration National Take Back Initiative will take place on Saturday, October 22 from 10:00 am-2:00 pm. Please consider going through your medicine cabinets and/or drawers and disposing of unused/outdated prescription and over the counter medications. Several national pharmacy chains have permanent collection sites.
The proper removal of medicine from the home will help prevent accidental poisoning for children and their family members, decrease drug diversion or abuse of certain medications and lessen the negative impact of pharmaceuticals on the environment. Studies have shown the presence of drugs such as antibiotics, hormones, cardiac medications among others in our nation’s waterways. Water treatment plants are unable to remove these compounds before they reach the environment. The majority of this contamination is most likely due to the natural excretion of the medications or its metabolized by-product from individuals taking the medication. While flushing unused medication may be a small part of environmental concern, it is a key behavior that can be easily modified.
Every day, more than 130 Americans die after overdosing on opioids. The prescription opioid epidemic continues to worsen. The DEA National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is an event that aims to provide a safe, convenient and responsible way to dispose of unused opioids and other prescription medications.
Visit takebackday.dea.gov to find a collection site near you.
Shield Testing Update
As you are aware, D63 began the school year by offering optional unobserved SHIELD COVID-19 testing for students. Over the past month, participation in this testing has been minimal, with just over one percent of students and staff submitting test samples each week. For this reason, we have discontinued offering optional testing.
Please note that we will continue to provide home tests to symptomatic students and staff, as needed and based on availability. Following the IDPH outbreak testing recommendation, home tests will also be offered to those impacted in a classroom outbreak setting.
Questions? Contact your school nurse.
