"Lesson Learned"
Plan to be a part of 2018 TEDxYouth@Columbus!

2018 TEDx Theme
This year’s theme is “Lesson Learned”. A lesson learned is just what it sounds like -- a lesson you learn in life. This theme is based on the idea of learning from your mistakes. Lessons learned could be described as defining moments in one's life that are memorable. Since they are based on an individual's life experiences, they are unique to each person. Life lessons can occur in any area. Although we learn many things each day, we don't always learn something that we feel will affect our behavior for the rest of our lives. This separates a life lesson from everything else we learn. It is usually something by which we have been profoundly changed.
TEDxYouth is Moving Locations
This year's TEDx event will be held at the Ohio History Connection, 800 E. 17th Ave, Columbus, OH 43211. This is a CHANGE from the Columbus Museum of Art as previously communicated.
When? Where? What Time?
Date: Tuesday, March 6, 2018
Location: Ohio History Connection
Time: 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Why should my school participate?
TEDxYouth@Columbus empowers students to believe and have confidence in their own voices. It gives students the opportunity to create, design, and present ideas that have significantly impacted their lives. Literacy skills are weaved throughout the students’ research and development stages of their TED talks. Presentation and public speaking skills will be taught during all stages of their TED talk preparation.
Most importantly, TEDxYouth@Columbus provides students an opportunity to research ideas and have their ideas communicated, understood, and acted upon by the greater community.
How do I sign up as a coach?
You can click here TEDxYouth@Columbus Registration to register as the coach for your school. Register by September 29, 2017.
Suggested Timeline
- September: Select a motivated group of students. Brainstorm Life Lessons. To motivate your class, try a few of the teaching resources linked below. Watch TEDx talks and discuss the successful qualities of each. Use the TEDxYouth@Columbus Student Journal to guide you through the coaching process.
- October: Watch more TED Talks. Guide students in selecting personal life lessons to research. Discuss the personal connections to their topics. Have students complete the TEDx writing prompt found in the student journal.
- November: Through research, allow students time to delve deeper into their life lessons. Brainstorm interesting ways to catch the audience's attention. Students should begin to use the information from their research to transform their life lesson writing assignment into a TED talk.
- December: Students should perform their TED talks for their class/coach. Coaches should select the talks that they would like to video and submit them to the selection team. Not all students need to submit their talks. Videos should be submitted to the selection team by December 15, 2017. The videos don't need to be perfect. The selected TED talkers will be announced prior to winter break.
- January and February: The final TED talkers will attend two 1/2 day sessions on January 12th and February 2nd at the Main Library where they will be mentored. During these sessions the TED Talkers will finalize their TED talks, learn public speaking tools and create their slides/props.
- March 6, 2018: Come and enjoy our TEDx event at the Columbus Museum of Art!
