NEW!!!! PICTURE PERFECT STEM PD
December 13, 2017 ...... 4:30-7pm
@ Oakland Park ES (3392 Atwood Terrace)
Picture Perfect Science has created 2 new resources:
Picture Perfect STEM K-2 and Picture Perfect STEM 3-5
Come to engage in 5E lessons from the new Picture Perfect resource books. Don't let the word STEM scare you off. The new lessons embed even more reading-comprehension strategies that integrate STEM subjects & ELA through high quality picture books. The lessons will lead your students to ask questions and define problems; obtain, evaluate, and communicate information; and engage in argument from evidence.
Participants will leave with 1 of the new resource books.
Integrating Vocabulary Through Nonfiction Text K-5
February 6, 2017......4:30 - 6:30
@ Ecole Kenwood French Immersion (3770 Shattuck Ave.)
CIMS #: 1000030352
This PD will provide information about effective strategies for integrating social studies and science vocabulary using nonfiction text. Participants will receive a copy of, Vocabulary Games for the Classroom, by Carleton and Marzano, and a small group text set of your choice. This will be an interactive time of planning and preparing for implementation, as well as, learning about the research that supports the strategies. It is a great time for teaching partners to come together to learn, plan and create.
CONGRATULATION to the RECYCLE POSTER WINNER................... TEGAN ARTHUR from Clinton ES

Spruce Run Family Programming: December 9
Ohio's Wildlife: Tracking, Scat and Fur
December 9 from 10am - 2pm
This short introductory program begins indoors at 10:00 a.m. in the house conference center with a presentation and hands-on materials. After the presentation feel free to put your tracking skills to work and take a winter hike to see what tracks you can find. This same program will be repeated at: 11:00, 12:00 and 1:00. Make sure you stop by the classroom for other activities and crafts.
WHY TRACK ANIMALS WITH KIDS?
- It connects them to nature in a very direct and hands-on way.
- It teaches them to be aware of their surroundings and the creatures that live there.
- It gives them a chance to use critical thinking skills and scientific inquiry methods.
- It gives them a chance to experience nature with both body and mind.
- It’s an incentive for both you and them to learn about different animal species in your area.
- It gives kids a chance to lead and problem solve in nature.
- It’s an incentive to go outside.
- It’s fun!
The SEED Design Expo is a culminating activity for the program where students can showcase any life science project that they have created.
Online eProducts Science Textbooks
1st-5th grade teachers,
Recently we have discovered that Houghton Mifflin Harcourt ‘retires’ older online textbook editions and platforms every year. The science textbook we are currently using will no longer be supported through eProducts. This means we will not be able to use the online version in Columbus City Schools.
I apologize for any inconvenience and encourage you to use the CCS Science Website: Science Curriculum and Newsletters for classroom ideas.
