Winfield Elementary School Improvement Goals
All students will demonstrate measurable growth and achievement in reading.
All students will demonstrate measurable growth and achievement in mathematics.
All students will demonstrate growth in their social-emotional learning.
From the Principal, Mrs. Alonzo
Sniffles and sneezes and coughs, OH MY! It is hard for a parent to decide when to keep a child home. Are they contagious? Are they simply tired? Is it the flu? Regular school attendance is vitally important, but we understand that at times children (and teachers) need to stay home to fully heal and prevent transmitting germs to others.
Did you know that student attendance in early parts of the year is a predictor for future
attendance patterns? In a study completed by the Baltimore Education Research Consortium,
absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance patterns throughout the year, providing an early warning sign for parents and educators to intervene and put students back on track. The research found that: students who missed fewer than 2 days in September typically had good attendance rates for the entire year; half the students who missed 2-4 days in September went on to miss a month or more of school; and nearly 9 out of 10 students who missed more than 4 days in September were chronically absent that year.
It is critical that students (who are healthy!) are in school every day, and ON TIME every
day. If your child’s excessive absences or tardies are due to an extenuating circumstance,
please make sure that you are communicating with the child’s teacher and principal. We do record the reason for all absences/tardies, so please turn in appointment documentation
when applicable. Please limit voluntary absences.
Our student attendance rates are figured into our accountability results. Students must maintain a 96% attendance rate for the year, or demonstrate a 3% improvement in attendance versus the prior year. Please help us stay an "A" school!

HELLO!!
Kindness was the focus throughout our building this week, as part of our #startwithhello initiative. Each day, students participated in classrooms activities to spread the message that one little word can truly change someone’s entire day! The three main steps of this program that activities targeted include:
- Noticing someone who is alone (ex. Sitting by themselves, not playing with anyone)
- Reach out and help (ex. Including them, sitting with them)
- Start with hello
We encourage all of our families to continue this message at home with students. Here are some ways you can do this:
- Talk to your student about kindness- what it means to them. What does it look like? What does it feel like?
- Discuss ways your student can show kindness at home- helping around the house, opportunities to show kindness with siblings, parents, grandparents.
- Catch your student being kind and reinforce through praise and recognition!
This week was just the beginning for discussing and exploring Kindness! Our #startwithhello week is a great Segway as we transition into October- Bully Prevention month.

Positive Behavior Coach, Mrs. Adams
Hello, Winfield families!
This week, we began our 2nd Step lessons, and we surely have learned and discussed a lot! Our Kindergartners learned the four rules for listening and how to be a good listener. These rules help your child know how to listen and act in a group so everyone can learn. Be sure to ask your child about Puppy and how excited he was to be in their classroom! Our 1st graders also learned the four listening rules, which help them pay attention in class. They discussed what good listening looks like and participated in a fun game of My Turn, Your Turn, demonstrating their ability to listen well and follow directions. Be sure to ask your child about Snail and his wonderful accent (that sounds oddly similar to Mrs. Adams's voice). Our 2nd graders learned how to continue being respectful at school. We talked about how being respectful helps children be better learners. Your child defined "respect" and demonstrated what respectful behavior looks like by role-playing various scenarios. They had a bunch of fun voting on respectful behavior! This has been a fantastic week of classroom discussion and activities, and also, a great opportunity for me to get to know your child even better!
Looking ahead to the next couple weeks, we will partake in Bully Prevention lessons and activities since October is Bully Prevention month. Next week I will include in the newsletter the Bully Prevention Spirit Week schedule and provide additional information and resources. Stay tuned!

Vegetable Of The Month
The vegetable of the month for September is the radish. Radishes are an edible root vegetable. In addition to being heart healthy, radishes are high in fiber and help increase oxygen to the blood supply. We will be offering a sample during the month of September for all our students who wish to try it during lunch.
Nutrition Nuggets
Each month the Food Service department shares a newsletter called Nutrition Nuggets. This practical guide for busy parents offers ways to promote healthy nutrition and physical activity for children. Check out the September guide here: Nutrition Nuggets September 2019.
