Clark was 33 when a letter from Lewis invited him to share the leadership of the expedition. The United States President Thomas Jefferson was interested in knowing more about the country west of the Mississippi and in finding a water route to the Pacific Ocean.
Before Clark set out. Word came that Napoleon had sold an immense tract of land to the United States.

Louisiana Purchase- In 1803 United States President Thomas Jefferson set the example of getting new territory buy purchase rather than by war. The Louisiana Purchase had the states Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Iowa, North Dakota, Nebraska, Oklahoma. and Colorado Wyoming, Montana, and Minnesota.

Fort Mandon,ND- Fort Mandan was the name of the encampment which the Lewis and Clark built for wintering over in 1804-1805. The encampment was located on the Missouri River.
