Background/location

The Red Sea Coral Reef off the coasts of Egypt, Israel and Saudi Arabia is approximately 5,000 to 7,000 years old. Ten percent of the 1,200 species found in this reef live only in this area. The Red Sea Coral Reef includes the Dahab Blue Hole, one of the most popular and dangerous/intense dive sites in the world.

Descriptions

Length; the entire coastal reef extends along some 2,000 km (1,240 miles) of shoreline.

The most actively growing corals include highly branched species of the genera Acropora and Porites. There is usually minimal coral bleaching evident, although some localized outbreaks are reported from time to time. Also, of the 1200 or so coral reef fish species recorded, about 10% are endemic (found nowhere else).

Risks

There are a lot of animals that can harm people such as sharks, sting rays, poisonous jellyfish, etc.

since diving related tourism is an increasingly common cause of damage to coral reefs in tropical tourist resorts, there are some places where tourists are not allowed to dive in. Also, tourists are not allowed to touch the coral reefs.

If there is a rare storm, tourists will be warned about this, but these reefs are usually pretty calm, sometimes with a few natural disturbances
