May Health Observances

May is National Arthritis Awareness Month. There are different types of arthritis. Juvenile arthritis is a generic term to describe inflammatory and rheumatic diseases in those 16 and under. In the United States, it will affect over 300,000 people a year. Osteoarthritis is the most common type and what most people mean when they say they have arthritis. It tends to occur in middle age, but injuries and accidents can cause it to appear earlier in life. Chiropractic care, supplements, and nutritional counseling can all help with this condition. Lupus, gout, and psoriatic arthritis are also some types that we might see in the office. Questions about arthritis? Ask us!

May 9-15 is National Women's Health Week. This week serves as a reminder for women and girls, especially during the outbreak of COVID-19, to make their health a priority and take care of themselves. It is extremely important for all women and girls, especially those with underlying health conditions, such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions to take care of your health. Taking care of yourself may mean getting blood work done, start walking ever day, or getting a session of acupuncture to help with stress levels. Women tend to put themselves second, but if you don't take care of yourself, you can't help others.

Try a New Treatment This Month!

Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a gentle hands-on treatment that may provide relief from a variety of symptoms including headaches, neck pain, and side effects of cancer treatment. It is used to aid in the healing phase of the body. Benefits include facilitating spinal alignment, increasing blood flow throughout the spine and connected areas by unblocking pathways with cerebral spinal fluid movement, and stimulating the immune system by increasing lymphatic movement by using gentle traction-like movements. Craniosacral therapy leaves the body feeling more aligned, rejuvenated, and with improved mobility.

Tuna Poke Bowls Recipe

This month's recipe comes from one of Dr. Patty's patients who uses her background as a health and lifestyle coach to develop delicious tasting food. Dr. Patty could eat poke all the time, and when she makes her bowls at home this is the recipe that she uses. You want to make sure you are getting the best sushi-grade tuna you can. Dr. Patty uses the pre-cut tuna for poke bowls from Crowd Cow. A local fishmonger would also be a good source.

For the Tuna Poke

*1 lb sushi-grade tuna cut into cubes

*3 tbsp low sodium soy sauce

*1 tbsp rice vinegar

*1 tbsp freshly grated ginger

*1 tsp sesame oil

*1 tsp chili garlic sauce or Sriracha

*optional: 1 tsp honey or brown sugar for sweetness

For Assembling

*Brown rice, sushi rice or spring mix

*Avocado, edamame, sliced english cucumber, sliced jalapeƱo, scallions or any other veggies of your choice

*Black or toasted sesame seeds for garnish

*1 part mayo mixed with one part Sriracha for a spicy mayo drizzle

1. Whisk together soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, grated ginger, chili garlic sauce, and honey or brown sugar. Pour over cubed tuna and toss to combine.

2. Let tuna marinate for 5-15 minutes while you prep veggies.

3. Assemble bowls according to your liking and serve immediately.
