BHS Commitment to Equity
Dear Bellingham High School Students and Families,
I am writing to add my voice, as the leader of Bellingham High School to all those voices in our country speaking out against injustice and inequalities. As the Principal of Bellingham High School, I know that I represent an institution and for that reason, I want to clearly state that all educators at Bellingham High School stand against racial injustice in all forms. We are deeply committed to equality and justice in our school, in our community, and in our country. We recognize the responsibility we have as an institution to provide opportunity, hope, and equity to all students.
I know words are not enough, and for that reason, I think that the students and families of Bellingham High School deserve to know what steps we are taking to become a more culturally competent school. In the 2019-2020 school year, all teachers and staff members in the district attended a professional development session run by Dr. Kalise Wornum (https://www.kwdiversityinc.com/) entitled “Understanding Cultural Proficiency for Educators.” It was a powerful presentation and we all learned from our time with Dr. Worum. Bellingham Public Schools are continuing our work with Dr. Wornum next school year, and we will continue our work as a school and as an institution to fight racism and become more culturally competent.
During this last week, I struggled to find the right words to say, to write to my school community. Then, I read the quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “A time comes when silence is betrayal.” I realize that while I may not have perfect words to express my sorrow for all of the injustice and inequity our students of color face, I do have a voice and I cannot be silent.
I acknowledge that there is work to do, and I am committed to learning more and to create a high school where all students are seen, heard, accepted, and celebrated. Students, please check your email for more information and ways to become involved. Families, please email me directly mlafayette@bpsdk12.org if you are interested in working with BHS as we grow more inclusive and diverse at all levels.
Sincerely,
Megan Lafayette
Principal
