October 7-11

Finally looks like we may be getting some fall like weather. We have another busy week in fifth grade as the quarter is coming to a close.

In reading, we are going to be reading the story Satchmo's Blues from our Harcourt book. This is a story about Louis Armstrong. Students will listen to a song of his so they can hear him sing and understand the word gravelly. We will also be finishing up our novel, Becoming Naomi Leon.

In fifth grade math, students are learning about expressions, rounding and estimation with multiplication, and double digit multiplication using different methods.

In accelerated math, students will be continuing to learn about proportions, ratios & rates.

In spelling, we are reviewing closed, open and v-ce syllables. Students will be having their test on Friday. make sure to review nightly.

In social studies, we are finishing up Chapter 5 and will be testing on Thursday or Friday.

In writing, students read and listened to the poem, "Where I'm From" by George Ella Lyons. We analyzed the meaning of the poem and began a class version of the poem using our novel Becoming Naomi Leon.

Also this week, I am planning on showing the students what the October book report will entail. It will be a Google presentation that they will have to design to showcase their book
