Responsible Decision Making:
Self-Reflection & Finding Purpose
Who am I? Why am I here? What can I contribute?
Adolescents often see life as a series of events happening around them and to them, often outside of their control. Self-reflection is a tool used to help one evaluate choices in a situation and find a deeper meaning in how one engages with the world. As adolescents begin to self-reflect, they start to consider the impact of their actions on others and develop the moral compass that guides their decision-making.
"Purpose is a part of one's search for meaning, but it also has an external component, the desire to make a difference in the world, to contribute to matters larger than the self."
Teens can feel empowered by making choices that benefit others and contributing to causes they care about. Still, according to researchers, many adolescents struggle to find intentions "beyond the self."
Help your teen self-reflect & find purpose:
Support their "beyond-thyself" passions: Do they love animals? Working with younger children? Get excited about politics? Embrace their interests and show how they could benefit others.
Encourage perspective taking: Ask them to look at the world through the eyes of others, especially those in less fortunate circumstances.
Identify Beliefs & Values: Highlight shared moral beliefs and celebrate their character strengths.
Reflect: Be honest as you also openly reflect on personal behaviors and choices and how they impact others.
Model Empathy in Action: Demonstrate compassion and prosocial behavior by giving and serving others.
Now, consider the following:
What are the one or two best parts of the last 24 hours of your life?
Now, what are the one or two worst parts?
This activity is called "Roses & Thorns." Try this quick and easy reflection practice at home.

Perseverance
Our theme for this month is Perseverance! Perseverance is that drive that helps you keep working even when you want to quit.
Example: You’re doing school work and it’s your hardest subject. Maybe it is a hard math problem, or a long essay, or maybe you have to stand up in front of the class and present. Whatever it is for you, it’s tough. You are struggling. Maybe you even want to give up but you know the work needs to get done and you know you have to do your best work. So you try harder. You stick with it and after some frustration and focus, you do it!! You got it done and did it to the best of your ability.
